Theyve also had record profits for the past 10 years. It also got 3.2 billion dollars from the Goverment in the cares package. I hope someone from southwest is willing to help me. If not I will continue posting everywhere I can as a warning to whomever and also because it just sucks so much to be out $460. Especially considering my friends that used other airlines have already rebooked. Thanks for listening its been a really frustrating few days.

<LI-USER uid="141053"></LI-USER> wrote:

It sucks so much because I pay extra to use southwest hoping that they would resolve an issue like this. My best friend already rebooked through United. $410 is a lot of money to be out. Any customers on here that read this please take it as a warning. I have never even once asked for my money back, I am just trying to book a flight and they keep saying sorry nothing we can do.

I totally understand. Unfortunately, Southwest's covid accommodations were somewhat arbitrarily offered, leaving many customers like yourself disappointed. Those whose flights were canceled during the roughly 6-month covered period received a generous extension and the option to convert to points, but those customers whose flight cancellation or rebooking fell outside of that period -- those who in a good faith effort were actually hoping to still travel -- received nothing. It's unfortunate, and it's very disappointing. But with Southwest losing something like $12 million every day for many months as they just tried to keep their operations afloat, it's perhaps understandable from a bean-counter perspective. Not a justification, just an explanation.

You'll need to reach out to Southwest directly for any official reply or assistance.

Our advice, as mentioned in that other thread, remains: If your funds are expired (sounds like that's the case) you can reach out to Customer Relations (not the regular phone line) and request that they be reissued as a Voucher. You have 6 months from expiration in which to make the request, and the Voucher will be valid for 6 months from the date of issue, usable by anyone, but only for the airfare portion of travel (not any taxes or fees). This would at least allow you to recover some of the value from your expired funds.

Good luck!

<LI-MESSAGE title="Contact Customer Relations" uid="108355" url="https://community.southwest.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Contact-Customer-Relations/m-p/108355#U108355"></LI-MESSAGE>

(I recommend via Twitter or Facebook direct message)

Continue to regularly monitor flight availability on the "sold out" day. People cancel all the time. If a flight comes open, snag the seats.

As another option, there are other airlines. And since SW cancelled, it would refund to the original form of payment.

Thanks. Yes, we took the flight coming home a day early just to have something for now. I'm going to look up return flights in other airlines also. I realize it sounds silly but I'm almost in shock about how it turned out and was just hoping there was a better solution. We've been flying southwest for years and have never had anything but an excellent experience until now.

Pick another flight that is currently available so you have something booked and then continue to watch for alternative options. You can change the flight later, although you would be on the hook for any difference in price between what you have booked now and what you change to. Alternatively, cancel the return leg on Southwest and book with another airline that can work with your specific schedule.

--TheMiddleSeat

Flight cancelled

We had a trip from Chicago midway to cancun coming up in 2 months. While looking at my southwest account yesterday I was surprised to find our reservation had been cancelled without notice. After reading similar stories on here I guess that happens continues sometimes. Here's my main issue: after taking to southwest then can get us there as planned but can only fly us back either the day before or the day after we were originally booked for. Obviously on top of the whole situation being extremely frustrating, this creates an issue with the hotel. Either I lose 1.5/2 days in cancun or I have to try to get an extra night and then have to pay for that. My spouse has been talking to the airline. Spouse said they've actually been rude, said the best they can do is fly us another day, won't offer anything to make up for it, and even threatened to cancel the entire trip if we didn't drop the issue. The original day of our return still has flights listed but they all day "unavailable", not "sold out". Any advice is appreciated.

First, keep in mind that we're other customers here, trying to help. None of us are Southwest employees.

What is the expiration date of the $50 travel fund?

Unfortunately, cancelling on September 17, 2020 would not have extended your funds through 2022.

Was the booking for multiple people? If so, each person would have their portion of the fund as a credit in their individual account.

I'd suggest that your best bet to get an explanation of what happened would be to reach out to Southwest Customer Relations. Hopefully they can explain it to you.

<LI-MESSAGE title="Contact Customer Relations" uid="108355" url="https://community.southwest.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Contact-Customer-Relations/m-p/108355#U108355"></LI-MESSAGE>

If I'm reading this correctly, in April 2020 you booked a flight for October 2020, but you cancelled in October 2020 due to the ongoing COVID restrictions.

If this is the case, your travel funds would have expired one year from the date you booked, and if you booked in April 2020, that would be April 2021, and it sounds like that is what happened.

Had you canceled any time before September 7, your travel funds would have an expiration into 2022, but September 7 was the deadline for the extension.

--Jessica

Once expired, Southwest may reissue travel funds as a voucher, but there's a fee of $100 per person/fund. Is that to what you're referring?

If your flight was cancelled anytime between March 1 and September 7, 2020, your funds should have been extended through September 7, 2022.

I have $50 in my account from the $460 purchase. I tried to rebook in April for Fall 2020, but we went back into lockdown. The $410 I used is now gone, despite us supposedly having until September 2021 to book a trip with funds from cancelled Covid flights. I have been offered a credit of $310 for it instead of the $220 I was offered initially. I am not asking for my money back, I just want to rebook with my initial purchase price. My original $50 is still there. Why can't I use the $410? The rest of my friends have already been able to book our October 2021 trip with other carriers and not been charged a $100 fee.

I in April for the Fall hoping COVID would be under control and had to cancel due to my state going into lockdown in October. Vegas was also cancelling events, which was where I was trying to fly to. Those funds are now gone, and they're offering me a partial credit. The $50 is still in my account from the original cancelled flight due to COVID. If this company values customer service they could work with me and I would appreciate it greatly. I don't fly a lot, but I have used southwest in the past because they advertise that they prioritize customer service and being fair. I have paid them $460 and taken 0 flights during the quarantine. I am in no way asking for a refund, but I am just asking to use this money to fly when these states lift the lockdowns now that we have a vaccine.

Keep in mind this is on a case by case basis and the fee is subject to change.

-Blake

Tricky part of this - you won't be able to book that flight for the cruise in November using your new LUV voucher until the travel funds expire in October and then you have them processed.

All that to say if you want to lock in your travel for November earlier, I'd suggest using new money or book with points if you have that many built up.

It's hard to know what happened without more information on what funds you tried to use and when, but it's possible that some of your funds were not used/cancelled during the extension window between March - September 2020, were not given the September 7, 2022 extension, and have expired.

Southwest does not charge any change or cancel fees.

--Jessica

When you rebooked did you use all the funds from that first confirmation number?

Every time you cancel the funds are held under the confirmation you canceled so when you rebook if you didn't use all the funds on a new ticket the difference is still on that first confirmation number

Example you cancel conf# A you get a $300 credit you book a new flight with conf#B that cost $200 and cancel that you have $100 under conf#A and $200 under conf#B

If your funds expired well that is a different ball game.

I originally had a flight booked for April 2020, and cancelled it due to covid. Rebooked a vacation for October 2020, but cancelled that because COVID was still causing travel restrictions and my state was heading into a new lockdown. I am trying to book a flight for October 2021 and it turns out all my travel funds are down to $270? I booked with Southwest because they claim no fees and say they give great customer service. This is awful. One of my good friends did the exact same thing with cancellations and rebookings through United and was able to use all of his funds for this same trip in October 2021. I had to call customer service 3 different times killing 2 hours of my afternoon to even get this response. If Southwest has no interest in helping me I really think I should just use United and never book with them again. Anyone that has had a similar experience please comment below and save other people from being ripped off in this manner. Southwest if you would like to help please reply but at this point I am beyond frustrated and upset that you think this is ok.

You could certainly use the travel funds before they expire for another trip. If that's not possible, after they expire you have 6 months to call Southwest and request they be converted to a LUV Voucher. The voucher would be valid for 6 months. To complete this process the value of each travel fund is reduced by $100.

<LI-MESSAGE title="Contact Customer Relations" uid="108355" url="https://community.southwest.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Contact-Customer-Relations/m-p/108355#U108355"></LI-MESSAGE>

--TheMiddleSeat

Bumping this back up because TUL flights continue to give me grief 😅

I've been planning another PHL > TUL trip for May - Fri-Sun. My Friday flight moved from a departure of 8AM to 6AM (nothing I can do about that), and my Sunday flight got moved up an entire day to Saturday, because they cut flights entirely on Sunday.

Here's the thing - there are "options" to get from Tulsa to Philly by booking one ways (or multi-city). They may not be totally convenient, but they exist.

I ended up canceling the Saturday flight entirely and I booked 2 one ways for Sunday. TUL > DEN and DEN > PHL. There's a 7 hour layover 😂 but I don't care lol.

So here's my question: once I land in DEN do I have to "leave" the SWA terminal and re-enter the DEN airport and go through TSA? I won't be checking a bag. I wasn't sure how this worked with two separate reservations on the same day, and if I needed to go through security so they can verify my reservation details, or if I'll be fine staying in Southwest terminal at the gates. As long as I'm checked in, is that all I need?

--Jessica

You could also call 800-435-9792 and they might be able to look it up with the credit card you used to book the flight.

-Blake

If your flight has not already changed, the banner does not predict that it will change.

As said above it lets you make no cost changes to your reservation. Use the opportunity to see if a better flight is available. If one is, you can make a no cost change.

You have 72 hours to change to another time or nearby airport for no increase in cost. Usually this is because your original itinerary changed significantly. Sometimes I can't tell what changed.

I use this about 1/3 of the time. I have 3 airports equidistant, so I pick the best flight based on my current needs. Sometimes it saves me a lot of money, since the smaller airports can cost a lot more.

It seems to come and go unpredictably these days, with all the schedule changing due to Covid, etc.

Be sure to allow enough time to park the car, go through security, and check in at the gate.

Stop at the Southwest Airlines ticket counter if you wish to obtain an escort pass, which is required to accompany the child through the security checkpoint. Be sure to have the following documents to complete the check-in process:

A copy of the child’s itinerary

Proof of the child’s age (birth certificate, etc.)

Your valid, government-issued ID (required to get an escort pass)

It is recommended that you stay in the gate area until the YT’s flight is in the air.

Call the parent/guardian picking up the YT to let them know that the flight has departed.

--Jessica

I'm thinking about booking 2 flights right now for a trip my husband and I are taking this summer because the rates are pretty good right now and applying the credit. (The balance would be paid from my checking accnt) I just want to make sure I understand the policies correctly. If the rates go down between now and then I can change our flights and I would still get the full credit of the difference on my account right? They would just have the same expiration date as the original credit?

[Deleted & reposted to fix typos]

Mostly. 😉

Just a few things to keep in mind:

Non-transferability: Travel Funds (credits from previous cancelled flights) are limited in use to the original passenger(s) only. So, if the credit you already have is only in your name, the system will only allow it to be applied to your portion of the new booking, assuming it's for 2 people (you and your husband). This shouldn't be an issue if the credit is smaller than your portion of the airfare. However, once you've made that booking, if you cancel or re-fare (because the fare decreases), you'll have credits in both your name & account, and also your husband's name & account. Those credits will only be usable by the person whose name is on the credit. This gets a bit complicated. The easiest way to reduce that complexity is by booking individual flights for each person. (The trade-off is you'll need to check in each person separately.)

Expiration of Travel Funds: Whenever you apply any Travel Funds to a new booking, that new booking takes on the earliest expiration date of any funds applied. That expiration will also apply to any new funds used (from a credit card). All travel must be completed (not just booked) by the expiration date, which would apply to any credits you receive from re-faring in case of a fare decrease.

One special consideration would be if your existing travel fund expires September 7, 2022. (Southwest extended some funds to this date last year as an accommodation due to the pandemic.) If the existing fund does expire 9-7-22, then when you apply it, the new booking will take on a new expiration that's one year from the date you make the new booking. Any eventual credits would also have this expiration.

Using travel funds for multiple people can be a little complicated. Let us know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps!

You are correct. If you buy a ticket paid for at least in part with a travel fund , and later change the flight to one that is cheaper, SW will give you a travel fund for the delta between the two prices. That fee has risen from $50 to $75 to $100 per travel fund/person over the years, and everything about this -- including that fee -- is subject to change at any time.

Officially, once your funds are expired, they're gone.

I may finally be in this boat with expiring travel funds I may not be able to use. I had a flight booked for May, but due to flight cuts I canceled the flight out of frustration only to find out that the funds were expiring in June 2021 because I had applied a previous travel fund (from all the way back in June 2020) to the reservation. I believe this fund had an expiration of September 2022 at one point, but when you use it (and then cancel it) the 2022 expiration doesn't hold and it reverts back to the original expiration. There could be a potential argument to be made that any fund that was granted an expiration of 2022 should keep the 2022 expiration if it is used and cancelled again, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Regardless, if I can extend the travel fund by reissuing it as a voucher, I would do that, even at a $100 loss. I'll have to see what I can do.

--Jessica

For clarity, as we've often seen confusion over this issue: When you apply a travel fund that was extended to September 7, 2022 to a new booking and then cancel that booking, the fund's expiration changes to one year from the date of the new booking (not the original expiration date of the fund).

An exception would be if you also used an earlier-expiring fund on that reservation, as in that case all funds would take on the earliest expiration of any funds applied.

It's been awhile since I've used Southwest Vacations to book a trip, but if you are saying you have enough travel funds to cover the entirety of your trip, you should not need to enter a credit card. If you have some travel funds to use but not enough to cover the whole trip, you should be able to enter both your travel funds and a credit card to cover the remaining balance.

--Jessica

Unfortunately, flights are changing constantly due to the ongoing pandemic and flight demands. It isn't just Hawaii, but flights all over the Southwest route map. Most of the time you should get an e-mail regarding any flight changes Southwest makes, but there are times this doesn't happen so it's recommended to keep an eye on your flights well in advance of your takeoff in case any changes arise. If they do, you should be able to make changes free of charge for a period of time, and if you have trouble, Southwest should be able to assist you in making changes. Contacting them via Social Media (not phone) is best, as they are often quicker to respond.

--Jessica

This morning he indicated that he chose the wrong weekend and could he change it to April 16 returning April 18.

It indicated that the second flight was $248 less than the first one and that it would not return to my credit card but be used as a travel fund.

It has not been 24 hours so I feel this is unfair. I spoke to customer relations at 4:35 pm EST and she told me that if I had “cancelled” that flight I would have gotten the refund but since I “Changed”it I would not.

She said and I quote “ you had to learn the lesson the hard way”

I have searched and searched your fine print and absolutely nowhere does it say if you change your flight you won’t get the credit back on your card.
As I am typing this it’s STILL UNDER 24 HOURS SINCE MAKING THIS RESERVATION!

He has no plans to travel to use those funds and will probably be wasted money which no one can afford in this pandemic.
I beg you to put those travel funds back on my credit card as a credit. Your fine print does NOT have this information. Totally disgusted with Southwest.

Unfortunately, I've heard of this happening before -- where a carrier refuses to refund because you've made changes in under 24 hours. This is in violation of the DOT rule.

If it's still less than 24 hours since you booked the original flight, cancel the flight right now.

I think you might have misunderstood. Per your own words: "but they did say the Southwest Airlines portion of the package would have to be a credit."

You are not getting money refunded - you are getting travel credit for the flight portion - as well as the land/feature portion of your vacation, I believe. This is standard policy for Southwest Vacations. If you had Travel Protection, you might be eligible for a credit card refund for the land/feature portion of your vacation but this has to be requested within 60 days of the cancellation (or you will also get a credit).

Did you check your Southwest Vacations balance and see that a credit was applied?

You can read more of the policy here:

https://www.southwestvacations.com/package-terms-conditions/

3. Modification, Cancellation, Refund and No Show Policies

If your plans change, your right to a refund is limited and subject to penalties and fees as noted herein. You must immediately notify your travel agent or Southwest Vacations to cancel or make changes to your vacation package.

If you decline Travel Protection and cancel your booking, any refund due for the land/ feature portion of your booking (after applicable penalties) will be in the form of a travel credit from Southwest Vacations. If booked with Wanna Get Away fare and you cancelled your flight at least 10 minutes prior to travel, the air portion of your booking will be refunded in a Southwest Airlines air credit, which may be used on a future Southwest Vacation. Anytime and Business Select fares are refundable back to the original form of payment or choose to convert the air credit. Contracted group bookings will be refunded in the original form of payment. If you purchased Travel Protection and are eligible for a partial or full refund in original form of payment, the land portion of the refund due will automatically become a travel credit if not requested at 60 days from the date of cancellation. Travel credits are valid for 12 months from date of issue and must be used for travel prior to expiration date, are nontransferable and nonrefundable, have no cash value, and are issued in the name of the passengers on the original reservation. Standard change and cancellation policies apply to bookings made with travel credits. Travel credits will be held on the original booking.

Southwest Vacations does not charge any modification or cancellation fees for the air portion of your vacation package. In case of a modification, Southwest Vacations will apply the value of the reusable air to the new air on the modified reservation. If the reusable air value cannot be applied to the reservation, it can be redeemed by the same passenger for future air travel which must be completed by the expiration date. Redemption information will be provided at time of modification/cancellation. Once booked, any modifications or cancellations to the hotel, rental car, or features/excursions on an existing reservation are subject to supplier penalties up to the full component price. You may avoid supplier penalties by purchasing the Southwest Vacations’ Travel Protection option. Certain excursion operators only allow a refund if canceled upon notice to them. Contact the excursion company for the applicable notice provision and to arrange a refund. Many hotel reservations are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and you may be charged 100% cancellation/change penalties.

All modifications and cancellations must be communicated to Southwest Vacations no later than ten (10) minutes prior to scheduled departure to allow time to process the modification and avoid “No Show” forfeiture of your funds. Modifications made within 24 hours of departure must be communicated through your travel agent or by calling Southwest Vacations’ 24-hour traveler assistance line at 1-800-775-7105. If you booked on Southwest Vacations website or through the Southwest Vacations contact center, contact Southwest Vacations directly at 1-800-243-8372.

All changes and cancellations are subject to availability, limitations, restrictions and fees imposed by Southwest Vacations and hotel and feature/excursion suppliers. Once travel has begun, there will be no refunds for any unused or partially used non air travel component for any reason. There will be no refunds for any unused or partially used Wanna Get Away fare for any reason. Anytime and Business Select fares are refundable back to the original form of payment or choose to convert the airfare into Travel Funds

All refunds must be requested within 60 days of the date of cancellation. If you booked through a travel agent, your travel agent must submit the electronic refund request. If you booked on the Southwest Vacations website or through the Southwest Vacations contact center, please email your request to refund@southwestvacations.com. Acceptance of a refund constitutes a waiver by passenger of all rights and remedies under applicable law.

Customers who fail to cancel reservations for a Wanna Get Away® fare segment at least 10 minutes prior to travel and who do not board the flight will be considered a “no show”, and all remaining unused Wanna Get Away® funds will be forfeited. All remaining unused Business Select® and Anytime® funds will be converted to reusable travel funds for the originally ticketed Passenger only.

-----------

--Jessica

A refund for what exactly? Southwest Vacations has its own terms & conditions, listed here:

https://www.southwestvacations.com/package-terms-conditions/

Reading through the terms I see very few instances of customers getting an actual credit card refund for flights that you cancel yourself, unless you have an Anytime or Business Select fare, or if you had a group booking, or if you purchased Travel Protection. Do you fall into any of these categories? If Southwest canceled your flight(s), then that's a whole other issue.

3.

I also agree it would be nice to save frequent travelers info on our profile that way no matter which method you use to book you can just make a click or 2 and make life much easier and it would help when it comes to booking a flight with just a couple seats left as typing out all the info can make a difference in getting the flight or not.

If you are using an IPhone to book your flight maybe this will help for the time being.

<LI-MESSAGE title="How can my iPhone help store info for frequently booked travelers?" uid="96786" url="https://community.southwest.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/How-can-my-iPhone-help-store-info-for-frequently-booked/m-p/96786#U96786"></LI-MESSAGE>

--Blake

I reached out to them in April 2020 to see if there was a possibility of a cash refund. They denied that but replied saying that they are working on policy changes that would extend my funds till 2022. They never got back to me and now when I reached out to them, they responded saying that my funds have expired as they only extended flights canceled from March 1st.

They didn't contact you?? Did you really expect the airline to individually contact each and every one of the probably millions of ticket holders that cancelled. Southwest put the details of the ticket extension on it's webpage. You never bothered to look????? It was not kept a secret.

When the airline "didn't get back t o you" f or almost a year, didn't you think it strange? You didn't reach out for a year???? They keep sending me stereotypical messages like 'we are sorry for the misinformation provided to you by our agent but we can't refund the full ticket amount. Here is a good faith voucher of 80$ for each passenger'. It is absolutely awful how they first stole my funds by providing me misinformation and then they have the audacity to patronize me and condescendingly give me a 'keep your mouth shut' voucher. My ticket costs were >500$ and now when I can finally plan a trip after getting vaccinated, they are taking it away from me. Let's not forget that they actually got bailed out by the government and could not reciprocate the same generosity towards its customers in a time the entire world came crashing down. The true character of any business becomes apparent in these times.

Overall I am a net promoter of Southwest and they have a large majority of my flying business both for work and personal travel. However, the one spot that frustrates me compared to other online booking experiences is having profiles that make it easier to book for my entire family. I fly with my wife and kids and it is really frustrating to enter their data, look up their rapid rewards account, and do this each time I need to fly.

Is there any way we can get it that you can add people you fly with to your profile and then select them when booking?
