A Love Song to Music City

If I was a songwriter, which let’s face it, I’m one of the few Nashvillians who isn’t, I think my first love song would have to be to Music City. It’s a city that never lets me down, with its creative vibe, laid back coolness, beautiful art, amazing history and let’s not forget, the incredible music. To be honest, I’ve had a pretty steady love affair with this town for quite awhile.

I’d start the song by telling Music City what makes it special to me. Of course, the plethora and diversity of music tops my list. The best memories are those I’ve made dancing the night away at Robert’s Western World, being swept away by the talent at Station Inn, rocking out to shows at The Basement, being inspired by songwriters at the Bluebird Cafe and catching a headlining act at Ryman Auditorium. Whatever my mood, Nashville delivers. (Need to find out for yourself? You could win a trip to see Martina McBride perform at the Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 28th, compliments of Southwest Airlines).

Of course you don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been. (I might need to check on the copyright of that phrase before putting it in my song.) Places like the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Grand Ole Opry, Hatch Show Print and Music City Walk of Fame provide insight into what has made Nashville become Music City, the city that I love.

Next I’d have to thank Nashville for entertaining me with incredible music festivals throughout the year. In September and October alone, you’ll find me at the Americana Music Festival, Soundland, Live on the Green, International Bluegrass Association’s Music Festival and Musicians Corner. I’m not sure how I’ll get all these to rhyme in my song, but I’ll worry about that later.

I can’t forget to thank Nashville for being the perfect melting pot for the creative spirit that thrives here. From world class exhibitions coming up at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the beautiful estate of Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, and the art studios, galleries and art crawls around town, it is a mecca for art lovers like myself. And speaking of love, don’t get me started on the talented chefs raising the bar on Nashville’s culinary scene, pairing southern traditions with their own signature style. They really know how to make my heart skip a beat.

I would end the song by letting Nashville know how it makes me feel. (It’s a song, we’ve got to talk about feelings!) Music City, you have charmed me with your musical, historical and cultural flavors. You have style and class and treat your guests with a southern hospitality that makes everyone feel as if they’ve come home. I can’t think of a better subject for my very first love song.

Beginning August 12, Southwest will be flying nonstop between Nashville’s International Airport and Boston’s Logan International Airport. It’s just another reason to sing.
