When I first started out as an Oakland Customer Service Agent in 1995, I didn’t think it was going to be a career. Fast forward 23 years later, and I manage one of the busiest and most complex operations as Station Manager for the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
In March, we celebrated Women’s History Month, and as a female Ground Operations Leader, I’m honored to work for a Company who has continually given women opportunities in Leadership.
Throughout my Southwest journey, I’ve had many phenomenal mentorswho saw my potential, and encouraged me to take the next step. It wasn’t always easy; there were times when I was given stretch assignments that challenged me and took me out of my comfort zone.

Whether it’s seizing an opportunity or not being afraid to speak up, sometimes you have to make yourself known. When you have a gift and a passion, you want People to recognize it. Be who you are, know what you have to offer, and bring all of it to your role.
As women, sometimes there are so many expectations. We may have to wear many hats: we’re mothers, we’re career-women, or maybe we’re not—and it’s okay! It’s okay to admit when we need help. At the end of the day, I’m still a mother and can be vulnerable without having to sacrifice from one role to another.
Regardless of my position or my title, I’ve always tried to be true to myself and lead by example. Ultimately, male or female, we all have something to contribute and we all offer something unique in our roles.
