Back to Work

I was thumbing through the November/December issue of AARP's magazine the other day, and read an interesting article about a few jobs that might be particularly attractive to the readers of AARP. 1) Ski greeter. That job seemed logical, i.e. getting paid to hang out at your favorite resort. 2) Cruise lecturer. Again…logical. Fun, getting paid to travel and meeting People from all over the world. 3) Airline Baggage Handler. Was this a misprint? I've spent just enough time on the ramp to know how hard our Ramp Agents work. But as I read on - flexible hours; good hourly wage; excellent health benefits; free travel, it makes a lot of sense for someone wanting a secure job with a great Company! The article quoted a baggage handler with another airline, "you needn't be a Superman", and "you need to be able to lift 60 pounds, which isn't hard if you're in reasonably good shape." With all of our growth in cities like Las Vegas, Phoenix, Baltimore, and Orlando we always seem to need People with Fun-LUVing attitudes and strong backs to work on the ramp. If you're a baby boomer (or not) and are interested in free travel and a meaningful job at a great place to work, go to www.southwest.com/careers We are closing the comments on this post because Jeff has written a new post on this very subject.

I recently went to an open house interview. 40 applicants mostly men. Finally there was a total of 5 women applying for the same ramp job. Do women have a equal chance of being hired? Is anyone hired at the open house? I saw a applicant that had the airline's folder with new applcant information inside? I was told they had 20 openings out of a total of 160 applicants?

Hi everyone I finished my one on one interview. I am applying for the LAS ramp position. I hope I got the job and I know I'm ready to start with the southwest family. I've worked in the airport for about 4 years and love it. I currently work in C gates and that is where southwest gates are. I've asked a lot of people how they like there job and I never hear anything negative. I was wondering how long the background usually takes? I'm assuming they use a different screening. I'm already badged and I shouldn't have anything to worry about. Just the waiting is killin me but I kno it will work out in the end.

hi Laurel, thanks for the information I will give them a call on tuesday because tommorow is Labor Day. I am excited to be a part of southwest. Everyone that works outside seem to have fun and love there job. I never really looked at southwest until I over heard a couple guys talking about how much they love there job. The only thing I really do regret is not applying earlier. I sleep with my phone hoping its southwest.

Ok don't know if anyone is still reading this but got the email yesterday and taking my drug test today. So far so good it took about a week and a half to get my background cleared. we will see what the next step is hopefully training in dallas. I feel I will have this job for awhile.
