Behind the Scenes of Southwest’s Newest Commercial

Whenever I see Southwest commercials, it always reminds me of how proud I am to be a Southwest Employee, because our commercials don’t use actors, but actual Southwest Employees.  But, for me, this new ad was a little different.  Why?  Because I’m one of the Southwest faces you’ll see showing how we give back alongside you.

Last December, Southwest debuted a new ad campaign during football season that highlighted how we give back and make a positive difference in the community.  We may be an airline, but we do some of our best work on the ground, and it always comes from the heart.

As you watch, keep your eye out for the meeting scene – that’s me in the blue shirt.  You might ask what a meeting has to do with community outreach.  My Team, Community Affairs & Grassroots, is in the business of building and nurturing relationships in the communities we serve – and lots of times those begin with a simple meeting.  Our goal is to build and maintain lasting relationships with community, business, and civic leaders.   We work with a variety of Chambers, non-profits, and business organizations.  I hope you can see from the commercial how much I LUV what I do!  I am definitely not a professional actor, but what I do each and every day comes  from the heart.

When I was asked to be in this new commercial, I thought, wait, what?  You want ME to be in a commercial?  Almost five years ago when I started working for Southwest Airlines, I never imagined all of the wonderful opportunities that would come my way.  I certainly never thought I would one day be in a Southwest commercial!  And, it happened so fast!

I got the call on Oct. 23 about participating in the commercial, and by October 31, I was travelling from Dallas to Austin for a wardrobe fitting and filming the next day.

I think the wardrobe fitting made me more nervous than the thought of being on camera!  Here you are trying on different outfits as five to ten people give their thoughts on what they like or don’t like.  I thought for a second, if I’m this nervous now, then how am I going to feel when the camera starts rolling?  I fought through my nerves during the wardrobe fitting and it was off to bed as my first day of filming was quickly approaching and the last thing I wanted were bags underneath my eyes.

Rise and Shine.  I’m so nervous but excited at the same time.  Nervous about how I was going to look on camera and excited that I was about to represent the Company and job I LUV in a commercial!

Hair and makeup, please!  When I arrived on set, it was hair and makeup time.  I think this was one of my favorite parts about this whole process.  I absolutely loved having my own personal makeup and hair person!  I’m a girly girl to the core, so the chance to get pampered was an absolute treat!

Take one.  Rolling.  Cut.  And just as quickly as we started, we wrapped up filming.  Luckily, I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be.  I was told to just be myself and reenact what I would typically do in my job, so that’s what I did.  This :90 second video depicts all the ways we make a difference in our communities at Southwest – I hope you enjoy it, because I certainly enjoyed being a part of it!
