Blogging Gate Game...

We've had some pretty busy days here at the blog lately, so I'd thought it would be a good idea to have some fun.  Welcome to the first installment of Nuts About Southwest Gate Games!  I'll pose some questions and let's see if you all can find the answers on the internet or at least give your best guess.  Brian has even offered up some great prizes (Okay, some SWA swag!) for the first three folks with the answers. Today's Gate game will be about the Boeing 737 (Next Generation and Classic). 1 - On the 737-700, how much does each winglet weigh? 2 - What is the total added weight on the aircraft as a result of the Winglet Modification to a 700:? 3 - How tall is the winglet on a 737-700? 4 - What is the approximate fuel savings from the winglet modification on both the 737-NG (Next Generation) and the 737-CL (Classic Fleet)? 5 - On the 737-CL, how much does each winglet weigh? 6 - What is the total added weight of the winglet modification on the Classic Fleet? 7 - How tall is the winglet on the Classic Fleet? Some of the ways that this winglet modification is helping us are: 1. Improved takeoff performance 2. Lower block fuel (uses less fuel) 3. Increase payload range (can fly farther) 4. Lower emissions and airport noise So, if you'd like to play, just add your answers in the comment section, and I'll post the answers in a week or so. Good Luck!

"Southwest, the industry's low-cost provider, is keen on finding innovative ways to keep our operating costs in check so we can continue to provide low fares to millions more Americans," said Laura Wright, Southwest's vice president of Finance. "This technology is one way we can gain efficiencies in our operation and save money while we grow." 1) About 120 pounds each 2) Depends! 300 - 500 pounds, making total weight 121,444 pounds? I converted it from kilos from a British site, so I'm iffy on this one! 3) 8' 2" 4) from 4% to 6% depending on the type of aircraft and distances traveled. On average, 92,000 gallons of fuel per year!!! 5) 120 pounds 6) Again - 300 -500 pounds - is that too broad? 7) 7' Okay, so I'm an auditor and know nothing about airplanes. I found this info. online and from my sources. I don't know how right I am on the weights - it's so subjective - but I can learn anything. No swag needed, just an interview would be great! Thanks. ;-) Nikki (the freak with peanut resumes circulating all over the People Dept.)

1 - On the 737-700, how much does each winglet weigh? * 132 pounds 2 - What is the total added weight on the aircraft as a result of the Winglet Modification to a 700:? * 480 pounds 3 - How tall is the winglet on a 737-700? * 8 ft, 2 in 4 - What is the approximate fuel savings from the winglet modification on both the 737-NG (Next Generation) and the 737-CL (Classic Fleet)? * up to 6% at cruise depending on flight characteristics 5 - On the 737-CL, how much does each winglet weigh? * going to guess around 120 pounds 6 - What is the total added weight of the winglet modification on the Classic Fleet? * 800 pounds 7 - How tall is the winglet on the Classic Fleet? * 7 feet Tough questions this time, but a fun topic!

Well bummer - I guess my response got eaten by BLAST - the Brian Lusk Anti-Spam Technology at BlogSouthwest.com. Or maybe because it took me almost an hour to look everything up.

1. 132 Pounds! 2. It depends when the wingless were added on (in production or later on), but in the 380-480 pound range. Personally I think two answers can be accepted here as winglets have been added both as a retrofit and in production for Southwest! 3. 8 feet, 2 inches like everyone has said 4. I've seen different figures for this one, both from Aviation Partners Boeing! Their ad on the back of Airways magazine says 100,000 gallons for the NGs, but the website says up to 110,000 gallons for the -700 and up to 100,000 for the -300s. 5. 116 Pounds! 6. Like the -700 mostly, about 350-480. 7. Seven feet

Moderator - just a repost as I made a few errors! 1. 132 Pounds! 2. It depends when the wingless were added on (in production or later on). According to the APB website 334 lbs is added for -700s prior to L/N 1545. Everything after L/N 1545 adds 241lbs (retrofit) or 220 lbs (production). These numbers may be per wing as many are citing numbers in the 400s, I'm not sure. 3. 8 feet, 2 inches like everyone has said 4. IÃ

Bit of a late entry from me, but here goes. 1 - On the 737-700, how much does each winglet weigh? 132lbs 2 - What is the total added weight on the aircraft as a result of the Winglet Modification to a 700:? Depending on the l/n and wing installation type of your 737 - 480lbs, 482lbs or 668lbs 3 - How tall is the winglet on a 737-700? 8ft 2in 4 - What is the approximate fuel savings from the winglet modification on both the 737-NG (Next Generation) and the 737-CL (Classic Fleet)? 3.2-3.4% average over an average mission distance of 750mi, or up to 6% fuel mileage in cruise, depending on what missions you fly. 5 - On the 737-CL, how much does each winglet weigh? 116lbs 6 - What is the total added weight of the winglet modification on the Classic Fleet? 800lbs (including 2x 90lb flutter ballast) 7 - How tall is the winglet on the Classic Fleet? 7ft

James, I have to ask: do all of the Southwest bloggers take the trivia games they post seriously? It seems as though you do and will actually follow through with announcing the winners, but many months ago, I participated in some trivia game (during some Asian appreciation month) and the blogger never announced the winners or distributed the mysterious prize he promised. It doesn't mean anything now, but it just seemed slightly rude that the Southwest blogger ignored all the excited people who took the time to research the answers to his trivia questions.

Christina - we most certainly do! 🙂 If someone missed posting their answers, I'm sure it is because they just got busy. As mentioned above, I said I'll post the answers this weekend, but since I'll be flying, I'll actually post them NOW!!! :-) ***Drum Roll*** The answers are: 1 - On the 737-700, how much does each winglet weigh? 164lbs 2 - What is the total added weight on the aircraft as a result of the Winglet Modification to a 700:? 344lbs 3 - How tall is the winglet on a 737-700? 8.2 Feet 4 - What is the approximate fuel savings from the winglet modification on both the 737-NG (Next Generation) and the 737-CL (Classic Fleet)? Approximate fuel savings is 2.9% 5 - On the 737-CL, how much does each winglet weigh? 146 lbs 6 - What is the total added weight of the winglet modification on the Classic Fleet? 825 lbs 7 - How tall is the winglet on the Classic Fleet? 7 feet Since no one was exactly right on all of the answers, i'm just gonna take the first three responses for this one! You ALL did a GREAT job and the answers were provided by Vinnie Ploubis, Manager of Structures in Engineering. THANKS Vinnie !! And the WINNERS are: Joe Nikki Harrison If you all will email me (james.malone@wnco.com) your addresses, I'll see what Brian can find in the SWAg closet to send you as a prize!! :-) Thanks again for playing! I had an Extreme Makeover Home Edition flying a family to their vacation to Hilton Head from Portland question. Can I have a thread on this subject?

I have been flying from Florida to Philadelphia almost every month in the past year and have been very satisfied with the service on Southwest. I do not understand, however, why you do not permit small pets in underseat carriers. I was trying to earn free flights, but now, I can no longer use your airline as I have a toy poodle that has to travel with me when I plan to stay a few weeks.
