Cheesesteak Wit Beans: Keeping Score

[asset|aid=240|format=image|formatter=asset|title=RBRiPodLogoSmall.gif|width=180|height=179|resizable=true|align=right]What’s better, a Philly “cheesesteak wit” or Boston baked beans? To properly eat a cheesesteak, there is a certain stance one should take in order to not spill on one’s shirt. Cheesesteak: one.

Boston Baked beans have been around a lot longer than the cheesesteak. Beans: One. Philadelphians Pat and Harry Olivieri are usually credited with inventing the cheesesteak sandwich by serving chopped-up steak on hoagie rolls in the early 1930s. Ironically, it did not originally have cheese. Hmmm. Another one to Beans since the name did not match the original dish.

In 1952, Cheez Whiz was first marketed and has now become a common option on the sandwich and is traditionally ordered as a “Cheesesteak Wit” meaning with cheese. Clever term and very local: Cheesesteak two.

Don’t you just love Wikipedia?

So we are all tied up at two. The winner? The flying public of course!

Southwest Airlines announced new service between Cheesesteak and Beans—Philadelphia and Boston to most people—and a sweet introductory price as well. Maybe not as sweet as those maple syrup-flavored Beans, you could save a lot of beans.

My guest on this episode of Red Belly Radio is Paul Flannigan and he tells us all about the new gates added to the Philadelphia International Airport; how all of Southwest flights are now in one terminal; and what kind of food to expect when you get there. But wait, there’s more! It is not just flights between Philadelphia and Boston, there are also flights to Manchester, and Providence—both in the Boston area! Could this episode get any bigger? If it did, you’d need two iPods to listen to it.

I won't actually pick a city of preference, since I have never been to Boston, but I have to say them cheesesteaks is tasty.

My dad and i flew to philly via manchester only because i love southwest airlines and its 737's. anyways my dad only agreed to travel there if we got cheese steaks. To be honest the only good part was the 2 flights, and the cheese steaks. other than that Philly was bad. the cab drivers were ready to kill each other and the Philly terminal was awful! your gate E was under repair (back in May 2009) and the fire alarms were very annoying, because they went off the whole time. Anyways like i said the flight was the best part. We had FA Janie King who can be seen on the former TV show Airline. She was very funny. When we landed she sang the song All That Jazz from Chicago and then finished it off "that, thats from your chicago based flight crew, welcome to Manchester" and then we pulled into the gate and she joked "Now everybody out" xP she was funny. this is the video link> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kA0MLyB-0U

I wouldn't risk eating any of this stuff if you ever want to fit into a Southwest seat.

Hmmm. Is this supposed to be some kind of back-handed crack at overweight people or something? Weird timing for this post. What's next, a review of the best all-you-can-eat buffets in Las Vegas?!? Good to see that if anything Southwest is consistent in its lack of class...

Interesting article, but this Fat Boy in Philadelphia will be driving all the way to New York so I can fly Virgin America. I will gladly leave Southwest to the outraged skinny people who can't believe a fat person dares to sit next to them. Southwest... Stop Searching. Start Traveling. As long as your thin.

Actually the "wit" means with onions, usually you order by cheese type and "wit" or "witout" onions. So "American wit" "Provo witout" "Whiz wit" etc. Anyway, always glad to see more service at PHL! -Steve from Philly

First of all, you don't get Philly Cheesesteaks but someone already pointed that out by explaining "wit" to you. Seocnd, you HAVE to know that this food is fattening yet you promote it? The airline who hates fat people? Really? Who edits this blog? First they let the Not So Silent Bob original go up and now this? You really need to work on your PR.

I love the Philly cheesesteaks and if I did eat one I will STILL fit into the seat! Everything in moderation people!

@Anonymous - why all the hate for the City of Brotherly Love's favorite food? Southwest isn't promoting a cheesesteak, they just used each city's beloved food as a clever way to announce the new service between Philly and Boston (thank you Southwest!). Instead of paying, literally, hundreds of dollars for a 45 minute flight, I can now visit a friend without breaking the bank. And, Anonymous, if you are going to criticize Southwest for "promoting" the cheesesteak, why don't you write a letter to the City of Philadelphia, our tourism office, and all the other guidebooks who rave about about the Whiz Wit.

@<3 fan dude: Because...that doesn't make any sense? Philly isn't humiliating people for being fat. I doubt it gives to craps so long as they get tourism. SWA? Not so much.

This seems to be another misstep by Southwest's PR, or at least your social media team. Why are you posting something about food when the whole Kevin Smith fiasco was starting to die down a little? What are you people thinking? Still not flying you, but wishing for your own sake you'd fire your current team and hire some smart communication team. You need help. And a better seating policy.

Why are you talking about food just as the seating debacle was starting to die down? I mean, not only did you handle that situation horribly, but now that it's starting to go away in the media, you run this? You need help. And a new PR team. And a decent seating policy.

Wow are we seriously still talking about Kevin Smith on a completely different BLOG ? Some of you peolpe need to get a life. Get over it . Move on . Cry somwhere else because of those mean no good people at Southwest made a mistake. Because all other Airlines are perfect. IDIOTS

Thanks for the info about the cheesesteaks. Too bad I can't try one, though! You see, I'm on a diet in the hopes that one of your flight crew won't decide I look too fat to fly and then publicly humiliate me or arbitrarily throw me off the plane.

I'd like to apologize to the people of Philadelphia. As a fourth-generation Texan, and someone who has actually only eaten only one cheesesteak in Philadelphia, I got my facts wrong about what "wit" means. "Thank you for correcting my English." (A line from Trading Places set in Philadelphia.)
