Denver Storm Cloud

Our Denver Station sent us this eerie scene from the recent bad weather afflicting the Mile High City.  The wall cloud looks like the alien craft in Independence Day.

Wow, I wonder what the ceiling was on the storm, doesn't look that high.

Great supercell thunderstorm shot! I know several chasers that were on that storm.

This is Southwest Airlines flight 313, This is your captain speaking and I'd just like to say: WELCOME TO EARF.

This is not a wall cloud. It's the base of the supercell's rotating updraft, or mesocyclone. the wall cloud would be an appendage hanging from this updraft base, and would display persistent rotation and upward motion.

Jonald, thanks for the clarification. Either one sounds pretty uncomfortable to me. Brian

Is that a tornado in the background? It looks like it could be rain wrapped

Looks like the "V" ship is over the SW plane! Be very afraid.

That is terrible. I definitely will not fly in that condition.

Not a tornado in the background. It was a hail shaft with 2" hail in portions of Commerce City, CO.

Was this taken on the day that there were diversions of Denver-bound aircraft to Cheyenne, Colorado Springs, and Albuquerque?

From what I've heard, those storms closed the airport for a while (unusual in Denver, since the field is so large) and spawned a number of funnels.

That's a GREAT shot! "And that is why I fly SWA, they will get you there no matter who or what is trying to take over the airways! " I betcha the pilot was asking the "Alien" ship from "Independance Day" to move it, we gotta schedule to keep! All kidding aside, that is one heckava shot. Kudos to whoever thought to grab their camera or phone.

Fatsen your seat belts - it's going to be a bump ride. I am glad I was on the ground.
