It is sad to see Southwest has posted it's first loss in 17 years but I know you guys will figure out how to get through the financial mess this country is currently in. I am excited about Southwest coming to Minneapolis in March and hopefully you can add more cities instead of just Chicago. It would be nice to see Denver as well to handle people going to and from the west coast. Even if it's just one or two flights a day.

It was only a paper "loss" The profit was 69 million. The "loss" is a write down of the current value of the hedging program. Joe Friedmann- line RON plane cleaner

I hate to see any airline lose money - paper or otherwise. I agree with the first post though ... if anyone can figure it out, it's the folks at Southwest. Rob Mark

This loss is not good news. I have been flying for work every Tuesday morning from Burbank to Oakland on the 7:00 a.m. flight. I went to book my flights for November and December this evening only to find out my flight has been permanently cancelled. This flight is completely full every Tuesday. Why this flight? Now I will have to drive to LAX (an extra hour on the freeway each way) to get a flight to Bay Area that will get me to work on time. This means more time away from family. Please turn a profit fast so you can bring my flight back. Thank you for listening, Signed: Disappointed

I wish the fuel hedging program had been ended in June/July of this year. Than there would be no loss in September!! (And a waterfall of cash to the tilt) Seriously, the hedging program is like coin, it has two sides. The advantage is predictability the downside is, it costs money. Always!! I am OK with SWA paying for their fuel ahead of consumption. (or in arras of consumption) As long as there is a thought process included. That is, the time of paying for the fuel must vary with the estimated future price of fuel. If the program, at all times, is the same, than the cost can hardly justify the predictability. Management probably still have authorization to buy back stock, would be effective at prices prevailing at this time. Now cash is probably tied up in the hedging program making this impossible..
