Flashback Fridays--Early Star Power on Southwest Airlines

I thought I would “mine” the back issues of Southwest Airlines Magazine one more time because as I was researching last week’s post, I kept running across photos of “unusual people” who were flying our first flights.  I mean unusual in the best possible sense as referring to those folks who are either famous or wearing costumes of some sort.  As you can see from the photos below, my findings run the gamut from one of the biggest Hollywood stars ever to clowns and apes.

At least according to the magazine’s pages it took a few years after our June 1971 inaugural for the weird and famous to start showing up on our aircraft.  In particular 1974 was a banner year.  In the August 1974 issue, we have Ronald McDonald (above) on one of our flights.  This was actually the year the first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia, and although it predates our association with the charity, it shows our roots go back a long way.

As seen in the photo above from the next month’s edition, not all clowns are as docile as Ronald.  Here we see “the world’s tallest clown” next to one of our aircraft.  The caption states that he conducted onboard “balloon clinics” and handed out circus tickets.

One of the most recognizable men from the early days of broadcasting, Art Linkletter, had flown with us earlier that year, and in the picture above from the January 1974 issue, he is speaking with two of our original Pilots.

There’s no really good way to transition to the photo above from the December issue.  A San Antonio magician and makeup artist who worked on the Planet of the Apes meets one of our Flight Attendants.

Not all of the characters who preferred to travel in costume had as much national recognition as the ape.  Above we see the “Old Prospector” from Dallas’s National Bank of Commerce surrounded by our Flight Attendants in this photo from the April 1975 issue.

If you are talking about star power, Kirk Douglas defines that term.  From Spartacus to Lust for Life, his roles transcended the big screen.  And the accomplished actor didn’t need a costume to fly Southwest. The photo above shows Mr. Douglas with Lamar and Dallas Mayor Pro Tem George Allen at Love Field in the July 1975 photo.

That same month, a bear and his friends had to commute to the house at Pooh Corner, and they flew Southwest Airlines to Dallas.  Remember, this was the 1970s so don’t judge the eyes of Pooh’s friends too harshly.

All kidding aside, I think these photos show that Southwest was starting to appeal to travelers (and bears!) from all kinds of backgrounds.  Even today, you could be seated next to the biggest pop culture icon, a former president, or the neighbor next door.

I met my husband on Southwest Airlines, April 1, 1994.....I had been single for 12 years and spotted him waiting for the same flight...oh what a delight it was that I did not have an assigned seat, I just waited to be the last one on and found him on the plane, with an empty seat next to him:) Thanks to LUV Airlines it worked and we have been married almost 15years!!!! I have never taken another carrier since, when I lived in Atlanta I drove to Birmingham to fly out!!!!! Thank you again for your brilliance in seating, I am a very happy women!

Cool pictures, though of course none are included that show SWA stealing it's business model from class-act PSA- whose only mistake was letting itself get bought out by US Airways..

fly S/W 49 weeks a year and wouldn't fly with no other airline. I start out in ST Louis ever Monday and return on Friday. The crew at the ST Louis hub is the best in my eyes and it is good to see what they do and how they go out of there way to ensure that all goes well. I would like to see S/W start putting can ice tea on all their flights. The men that work curb side check in are a great group and they ensure that they help to start your trip out on a up note. I go into a lot of S/W locations and in my 6 years traveling with S/W I have never met a unhappy employee and in all my time with S/W you have only lost my bags two times and had them within 5 hours. I like to go back to the and pick up my own bags and this give me time to talk with the crew in lost baggage, they are a great group. I would like to say that all S/W employees’ are great team were ever I travel to or from. PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS SEND TO YOUR HEAD OF THE S / W Thank You Thank You Joseph Boushard

To the customer from St. Louie, Joseph Boushard, that flies SWA frequently and has enjoyed GREAT customer service... word of advice...be sure to avoid Phoenix Sky Harbor Southwest Employees, they are ALL rude, uncaring, insensitive and snobbish... what ashame - I too fly frequently and have YET to meet a Customer Service oriented SW employee there.

It is nice to see that SWA is willing to let negative posts go up on this comment section; however, I wonder about the person who says ALL Southwest emps. at Sky Harbor are rude, etc. I have flown SWA since 1987 when I lived in Tempe, AZ and I have encountered fun, friendly SWA emps. 99.9% of the time, across the country. Keep having fun, SWA people!

Luckily we live in Windsor, Ontario, on the Canadian side of the Detroit River, so we don't have to drive 250 miles to Toronto and pay probably double or more one way than a round trip on SWA out of Detroit Metro. This even holds true when a flight is booked on relatively short notice. In 7 or 8 trips to Arizona, including 2 into and out of Phoenix, my wife and I have never had a bad experience with any SWA staff. Even though we don't qualify for frequent flier status, I can say that the same trip on another carrier didn't go nearly as well. Regardless of who came up with the business plan first, it works for you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Your flight attendants are very customer friendly and can be very entertaining in the way they give the usually boring pre-flight announcements and recitation of safety information required by all airlines. I think for fun you should outfit volunteer flight crews with the original mini-skirts and go-go boots complete with 1971 hair styles. Most of your flight crews would probably enjoy dressing up in the style from your early days depicted in these photos. Your corporate lawyers would probably nix the idea, but I'll bet your original passengers would get a kick out of it if you could pull it off.

I do not agree with comments made about SW employees in Phoenix...My husband and I just flew into and out of Phoenix and were treated with respect...by both the airport personnel and Southwest personnel. Sometimes you only get what you give.

I have to tell you, that as an adult I had never been on an airplane. My very first flight ever was leaving from Baltimore, taking a direct flight (by myself) to meet up with my husband in Las Vegas, NV, during one of his conferences. I was extremely nervous, but the flight attendants were so friendly, very funny, cracking jokes and laughing, looking for anyone with birthdays or anniversaries, etc. Because of that flight, I have never had an issue with flying since, and I have never flown with another carrier. Our family goes to Orlando atleast once a year every year, and my husband has to go into florida several times for work, and we absolutely love this airline! I hope SouthWest airline and their wonderful employees are around for a very long time!! Tammy

I fly SWA every chance I get. When I was working for a defense contractor and had to travel, I always used SWA even though our travel department didn't want us to (they received no kick-backs from SWA like the other airlines). I knew that most chances I could get a direct flight flying out of the BWI hub and seldom was I ever late and not once in all the years I travel did I not have my luggage arrive with me. I was so happy when you opened service to Panama City as that was the one place I traveled to frequently and I had to fly another airline. It was almost a guarantee that I would be late or my bags would not arrive with me. Unfortunately after 28.75 years, I got laid off and never got to fly there on SWA. Now I fly SWA to visit my daughter in KY. She lives in Lexington so I fly to Louisville and drive the hour+ to her house.

I Love SWA, they are who I look at first when I flly anywhere. I have never run into any rude or unkind person of SWA. The Curbside folks to the Cabin crew are all fun and friendly people. I like how SWA makes their trips fun with thier antics especially on one trip where the flight attendants went on loud speaker looking for a date for their Captain and at the end of the trip they asked again for any takers and even had the Captain come out so passengers could see him as they got off hte plane. Never knew if he got that date or not. I hope to be flying with you next week IF that certain flight hasn't been sold out.. lol Keep up the good work!

Luv SW airlines. I am an A-list flyer and use them frequently on business and occassionally for personal travel and they are the most on-time, friendliest employees I have encountered in my travels. I have experienced Sky Harbor on PHX and they are great people as well. I genereally fly in the Northwest between Spokane and Portland and Spokane and Seattle and for being in Alaska Airlines country, SW beats them in price, service and friendliness. Their flights fly whether or not they are full, cannot say that about their competitors who frequently cancel half full flights and bump you to the next flight. How frustrating! Thanks for all that you do and keep up your awesome service.

My professional opinion is that SWA is THE ONLY AIRLINE that hasn't lost their ever loving minds. They don't nickel & dime you to death like the others. This is the EASIEST airline to work with. It is such a pleasure doing business with them.

One of my first flights with Southwest about 20 years ago sold me on the airline. We were flying out of Baltimore, through St. Louis to Phoenix. There was a delay (by the airport, not the airline) and we were almost an hour late leaving BWI. All our connecting time was gone when we landed in St. Louis. Luckily our next flight was right beside our incoming gate. We boarded and sat down. The plane we came in on was already gone and we followed it. The most amazing part was that our checked bags were with us on our flight. Ever since that night, I always choose Southwest and highly recommend them to everyone. I have never experienced anything but kind, courteous personnel. I love the business model and open seating.

I love SWA and travel it both on leisure and for work. I have never had a bad experience even when I got snowed in and my flight had to be laid over on the way down South, SWA was so nice and accomadating. I just wish they would open a terminal down in Jacksonville, NC for the service people and families and all those who visit that area instead of having to land in Raleigh and rent a car and drive down. But I love SWA and would never fly another airline!!

I have flown with Southwest for more years than I want to remember and as far as the flight attendants are concerned, I think some of them are polishing their comedy acts for Las Vegas, it's a laugh a mile. It is very refreshing to fly with a group that likes their job. You are the greatest, now about the folks that bought PSA, talk about confused about what they are there for, Service?? is a foreign word to them. Keep it up you guys are great!!!!!!

I now find that I loathe having to fly any other airline but SWA. Airline travel has deteriorated immensely in this new century on all other airlines. I can't believe that people still fly on other airlines when they are being charged for their own luggage AND charged for wanting a seat in the first 10 rows AND being charged huge fees for needing to change a reservation - even if using frequent flyer miles!!! I have been flying SWA for many, many, many years, early on considering it the "Cattle Car" airlines. I am glad the backward seats are gone. I am very glad that the horrendous long lines of tired, rude passengers are gone from the Phoenix airport where people almost came to blows over who was in line to board first. I am glad SWA revamped their boarding process. I am most glad that SWA still believes in LUVing their customers!
