Do we look familiar? You may have seen us on one of your recent Southwest Flights. We’re Jeff and Lyda, a Phoenix-based Pilot and Flight Attendant, respectively. Recently, we had the opportunity of a lifetime to be contestants on the 26th season of CBS’ The Amazing Race. This season features 11 teams racing around the globe for the opportunity to win the $1 million dollar prize. It’s a special “dating edition” of the show, so it’s only appropriate that we share with you that we’re what we at the LUV airline refer to as a “LUV Couple!”
One of the things we’re fortunate to be encouraged to do at Southwest Airlines is “bring our whole selves to work.” This was a unique opportunity to do the opposite, and bring our “work selves” home, as there’s no doubt our 43 combined years of working at Southwest were an asset on this journey. For example, with the emphasis we place on hospitality at Southwest, we knew we’d be tolerant of all kinds of different personalities. Not to mention, we’re comfortable living out of a suitcase, making do with less, and navigating in and around airports! And, we’re never afraid to ask a complete stranger for directions or help. The “situational awareness” that is so important for Pilots to have was great to have in the race. Being able to focus on what is most important at the time is a great asset!
