At Southwest Airlines, Employees all across the system are finding ways to initiate environmentally friendly practices, so it’s no surprise that, according to a Travel and Leisure readers survey, seven out of the top ten greenest cities in America just happen to be cities that Southwest serves!

In order to determine just how green these cities are, several factors were evaluated, including recycling and waste management initiatives, environmental quality, and accessibility to green spaces.  The cities that were given a big “green thumbs” up are:

  • Portland, Oregon
  • Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Seattle, Washington
  • San Diego, California
  • San Francisco, California

Southwest’s effort to put a green filter on business decisions and lessen our impact on the environment takes place on a variety of levels, from an individual basis like our Green Ambassadors encouraging their Co-Hearts to recycle, all the way up to a city-wide endeavor such as saving fuel with our electric ground support equipment.
