Going Green: Reduce Your Paper Trail

Did you know that in order to manufacture a single sheet of paper, it takes more than 12 ounces of water?*  Did you also know that the average office worker uses 10,000 sheets of copy paper a year?*  That amount of paper uses about 1,000 gallons of water and more than a full tree’s worth of pulp to be manufactured. We know there is still a lot of paper used in our day-to-day operations, some of which is regulatory driven.  Where technologically, financially, and operationally feasible, Southwest does its best to reduce some of this paper usage through initiatives such as mobile boarding passes, electronic flight bags, and printer replacements.  We’re also working to reduce paper use in our support offices, as well—between 2009 and 2013, Southwest Headquarters Employees reduced their paper usage by almost 45 percent! There’s always more we can do to benefit the environment and save money, as well.  Simple ways we can reduce our paper usage at work and at home include:
  • Enabling the double-sided printing feature available on most modern multi-function printers
  • Emailing a document instead of faxing it
  • Thinking twice before printing:  Would a saved PDF version meet your needs, or do you need to have a hard copy?
