Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. frequently spoke about the power of community service. He lived his life serving others and referred to service as “the highest human virtue.” So it’s no surprise that MLK Day is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service. One of the best ways you can honor Dr. King’s legacy is through acts of service as they provide a meaningful impact on communities.

Southwest Airlines’ Community Outreach partner of more than a decade, Points of Light, is a global volunteerism and service organization whose mission is to ensure that people feel empowered to act on their unique desire to stand up and say, “I can help.” Southwest is a member of their Corporate Service Council and supports the organization through donated travel.

At Southwest, we strive to not only represent but also support the diverse communities that we serve. Employees have the opportunity to put their Heart in Action and make an impact through volunteerism, acts of kindness, and giving back by getting involved in organizations like Points of Light. This demonstrates our Culture of “Service and LUV” and putting People first. For inspiration on how you can celebrate MLK Day and support our communities, visit Points of Light’s website.

We believe that engaging in community service moves us closer to Dr. King’s dream to tackle society’s greatest challenges by bridging barriers and strengthening communities to create a better future.
