It Is Official--Wi-Fi Is On The Way!

Hello everyone!  You probably saw the title of this blog post and thought, “haven't I heard that before?”  True, the road to onboard wi-fi has been a long one, but this week we took a major step that gets us closer to rolling out the system fleetwide.  We ended the equipment "testing" phase and signed an equipment purchase contract with our wi-fi provider, Row 44. That means we now begin the process of getting equipment ordered and aircraft scheduling in place to begin our full fleet installation.

We’ll begin installing the equipment in the second quarter of 2010.  We expect to install equipment on around 15 aircraft per month initially, with the goal of increasing that number to 25 aircraft a month as we ramp up the process.  With this schedule, we estimate that our full fleet of more than 540 planes will be outfitted with wi-fi service by early 2012.

So, on to the next pressing issue… what will it cost to connect?.  We don’t have an answer to that quite yet.  We’re still testing a variety of price points on the four aircraft that currently have wi-fi.  We’ll have a decision on price in the second quarter of 2010—rest assured that, just like our fares, it will be a great value. You can count on it!

We’re excited about this new inflight amenity and we promise it will be well worth the wait! We’ll have more updates along the way, but, in the meantime, keep booking those Southwest flights! Your chances of traveling on a wi-fi plane will increase soon!  (And don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss that you've been surfing the Internet.)  😉

Wi-Fi is a nice added feature for Southwest travelers. However, this should be a service paid for by those that use it. Adding a few extra bucks to the price of the ticket does not make it free for everyone only more convenient for those that do use it. Many people seniors, children and those that are not computer illiterate should not have to subsidizes those that use it on Southwest flights.

Most have figured it out by now: The actual Wi-Fi costs are modest but the collection costs are outrageous. In addition to the initial collections are all the returns folks will do making the whole process more expensive! The airline would just about need a provider who would let the user fees carry over for more than one day or leg of a flight or both. All told, it is probably best business to bundle it in and not go to the expense of the collections debacle. I am one who would pass on the service due to the basic inconvenience and the security exposure of paying while in a public venue.

How about handling this similar to how Amazon handles shipping via Amazon Prime (one time yearly fee with 2 day shipping at no additional charge, or simply pay additional freight when desired) . Southwest could have a one time yearly fee tied to the Rapid Rewards number and allow that person to connect on any flights they take the rest of the year. And you could always add it as a ticket option when booking for those who don't want to go the yearly route (no pun intended). People hate being nickle and dimed, as well as being hassled for little things repeatedly - like the fee for bags - so make it easy to use for regular loyal fliers and don't tie it to the ticket (unless some folks only want it on a flight by flight basis). btw: Am looking forward to being able to use WiFi in flight. Thanks!

Great news! I'll pay for wi-fi, please just keep the ticket prices low, and bags free!

I hope you'll sell WiFi on a (monthly/annuual) membership basis rather than pay as you go since your shorter flights would not allow enough (in the air) time to be worth paying for Internet access.
Anonymous1453
Explorer C
Not everyone is going to want it so I don't think you should add it into the cost of the ticket. How about making it an option when you book your flight? There are several ways Southwest could handle this. Seems like the easiest would be to sign in using your confirmation number and name. They could also have a monthly or annual subscription for frequent travelers. By the way, love Southwest.

My opinion is that SWA should charge a minimal fee for wifi. Wifi is a convenience and not a necessity. It's not something everyone will want to use and making everyone pay for the access seems wrong. I just believe that those that want to surf the net while in the air will pay the fee. Maybe it should be included in business class/full fare paying passengers. I believe people fly with SWA because of it's value/service and making everyone pay for something only some may use will end up hurting the company in the longrun.

Have read the comments. Would suggest that an optional fee be added when reservation made (or an annual fee for those that wanted it). That would probably help with workload on Flight Attendants (F.A.). I'm sure F.A. workload is a concern. Would mean those that don't use don't pay (like early boarding fee). I certainly don't think it should be added free. SWA has an extremely competitive fair program and shouldn't compromise that for the sake of some that will use the service as opposed to those that won't. Perhaps, by adding an optional fee when reservation made you could tie the access permission (or access code) to the reservation #, i.e. using the same # for both. That way only the passenger that wanted the service would be charged for the service and this might simplify allocating access rights. If folks wanted to add the service at flight time the F.A. could use the same # with credit card. This likely also simplify record keeping since the Reservation # is tied to the passenger name and could help with future marketing. Using above method would allow me to use the service for a time on a flight and let my spouse of other family member use the service as long as the reservation # is only being used once at a time. Wouldn't happen often but might be done on long flights. Still paying for one use of the service. This would also cover situation where one family member's battery runs down but another family member has laptop.

I agree to build it into the fare. Keep the WiFi FREE! What's another $1 on all fares if it means FREE BAGS AND FREE WiFi? Woo Hoo!

Tom- I agree with you, it's so funny that people believe it should be free. Noone want to consider the expense of the service going into the planes, or the support teams that would have to ensure it's operational. I suppose if i was the owner of the company providing service I would expect to be paid for it, afterall, it would be my business and I'd like to keep my doors open and my people employed. I bet my employees would also appreciate me looking out for the better of my company because it keeps them employed and puts food on the table and clothing on the backs of thier children! Nickel and diming? Comeon people, don't you think that's ridiculous! Maybe selfish! Do u think my 80 year old grandparents deserve to pay for a service they are never going to use in flight? What about small children? Or people who are taking vacations to get away from thier PC!? I think it's a bit selfish, myself... Give me everything for free because I am going to use it right.... Let's not consider the people who don't care to use the service, and therefore probably don't want to pay for it... Or is it all about me, me, me??? I love the idea, I would not mind one bit paying for it! And personally I think we should have the option to purchase the service or not. Free bags... different story.. Because it common knowlegde that if we are traveling away from home your gonna have to take some clothes and thing with you, airliners should absolutely consider baggage into thier fare. Because even looking back to the 1970's or the original date that the airline industry was in business it's always been a necesity for people to bring clothing! As for my PC, while I use one daily and it's key to what I do for a living and by my using it the company that I work for makes money... Its just not a necesity for me, a child, my grandparents etc etc. And I don't think that everyone should pay for it because while it might sound foriegn or " behind the times" for most people... Not everyone cares to have wifi at thier fingertips If i dont intend to use it on one trip or another I don't want my flight to cost more because of another passengers job requirements or some person who wants to spend thier entire flight time on facebook! I would say that everyone considered the service should be optional... I would definitely pay for it on a trip by trip basis for my iPhone or my PC. Please SWA, stay profitable... Keep people employed... I would hate to see such a wonderful airliner down the tubes... And to see more people losing jobs just wouldn't make sense.

I say add it to the ticket price. I agree with another post, it is always the ticket price then all these additional fees. If the ticket went from $59-$63 no big deal!

This is a great idea for those people who cannot stand or can't afford to be out of touch for any length of time whetehr for business or pleasure. However if they want the service they should pay for it. Dont' raise ticket prices for everybody to subsidize the needs of the people who want/need the service. Luckily I generally have short flights and welcome the few hours away from my computer connected or not.

Great idea. Definately if we could use drink tickets to access the Wi-Fi would be good.

I hate the airport wireless for fees. I especially do not like stupidly high fees. I just do not and will not purchase those services. I am one of those who thinks your approach should be ADDED VALUE for flying on SW. Make it free and again one up the competition and make your loyal flying group more loyal and larger yet. You will grab more of the business traveler market by adding this perk. If you have to charge then keep it low. Use a pricing scale of say $3.00 to $5.00 per flight based on length of flight time. Give it free to your business class customers, early bookers and frequent flyers (you’re most loyal of customers).

Thanks for adding WIFI. Here is an idea that will save both Southwest and your customers money: 1) Get rid of the free drink coupons that you send out with a Rapid Rewards Award. 2) Instead make the Rapid Rewards card like a credit card -- when some earns an award, give credit that can be used for either a free drink or free WIFI. Also, enable passengers to use rapid reward credits to purchase WIFI during their flight (for example, for .5 credits per flight). Less paper in the mail saves Southwest money (printing, postage, etc.). Example: Joe racks up 16 credits and gets a free flight. You award an extra credit to his account (for a total of 17). Joe goes on vacation and uses the 16 credits for his trip and he uses the remaining 1 bonus credit to purchase a beer (.5 credit) and WIFI (.5 credit). Sue travels a lot for business. She has 45 flight credits -- and the LAST thing she wants to do on vacation is get on another airplane. However, she uses 1 flight credit each flight to pay for an upgraded snack (.5 credits) and her WIFI (.5 credits). For those OTHER people who don't fly Southwest all the time -- THEY can PAY for their drinks, snack upgrades, WIFI, etc. Serves them right for flying other airlines 😉

Wi Fi is near useless if there are still no power outlets on the planes.

WiFi!!! That's great news!! I don't mind paying for it when I use it. I don't think it should be built into the fares because that wouldn't be fair to the people that won't be using it. Low fares, free bags and a fee for WiFi, what a great deal! As usual, Southwest Airlines is the BEST!

The idea of WiFi is great, and can really help with productivity or just passing the time. But PLEASE DO NOT - DO NOT - allow VOIP. All that will do is give you a bunch of very annoyed Customers at the end of the trip. If somebody just can't be out of touch for an hour or so, they can use their email - we don't want to listen to their entire life story.

As a small business owner we really appreciate your business model and focus on not nickel and diming the flying public. However, with that said I realize that this is a value added service and I would be willing to pay for it. Furthermore, someone had the idea of issuing "credits" instead of drink tix for some of us who get a few free trips a year on your frequent flyer program. I like that idea!!!! Keep up the good work! Just a note, if I was your management on shorter haul flights (eg. ONT to LAS), I would not invest the captial for WIFI. It just is not practical to wait till 10,000 feet, boot up the laptop, start to do some work, and then be told to shut it down. On short flights most business travellers I know tend to use that time for catch up reading (including me). Ron

This is the coolest news I have heard in a long time. Is this going to be a third party company providing the service? I hope not, because my my fear is, a third party will not have a the commitment to excellence that SWA does.

My two cents: I think the service should be free because SW is asking users to rely on their own power source - if they were to make power available, then I might be OK paying for it. I did read the bulk of the comments, at least through page 2, and many many people are missing several key points, not having read existing comments before making their own. FIRST: Waaaay back at 1/29/09, Brian Lusk stated that it has already been decided that VOIP will NOT be allowed. There will not be 25 verbal conversations taking place. Keyclicks are another story...can't be helped. Even without WiFi, many people work during flights and it's just a fact of our modern world. Try to be aware of where your elbows are!! SECOND: I can't see how there will be plug installation on the planes. Think about this - retrofitting the entire fleet with plugs at seats would be an even more astronomical cost than setting up WiFi. I think people would be willing to pay as long as they can access (plug in to) the system for their entire flight and not have to worry about battery power. But what if I paid for the service and had to use only my battery (current model for WiFi on SW) and my battery died 30 minutes into use, I guess that's my problem? You need to somehow have battery power that will last the duration of your travels, however long, OR you run the risk of a dead laptop upon arrival. Even with a fully-charged battery, these days it's hard to know how long it will truly last with constant use. SW won't have plugs to use, so factor that into your remarks about paying for the service. Along those lines, asking for more room between rows so people can USE WiFi more comfortably isn't going to happen either. Loyal customers all seem to value the fact that SW is the people's airline - they have and and continue to be the most responsive to consumer input. We appreciate the corporate philsophy, including fee structure, bag policy and liberal change policy and for that reason alone we will continue to fly them.

At a minimum, as you install WIFI, mark on-line which flights have it installed so we can choose the correct flight until all planes have it. Also, those who use should pay, not everyone. I'll use it and happily pay as long the fee remains reasonable, under $5, like an alcoholic beverage. You can't charge every SW flier by raising all ticket prices unless you are adding a single dollar... Entice people to buy via Rapid Rewards!

To all you people "disappointed" that SWA would charge extra for WiFi... come on now. These guys already have bags fly free and some of the cheapest airfare I've ever seen, along with the best customer service I've ever experienced. They have to make money somehow, they're still a company! They can't give everything away for free, geeze. And to the ones that think it should be built into ticket prices... no, it should not. That makes it extremely unfair to the people who either chose not to use WiFi or do not bring devices with them capable of using it. I personally would probably use it, but I wouldn't expect someone else to pay more for their ticket so I can use it for "free." Besides, WiFi isn't "free" if they slightly raise their ticket prices to pay for it. I think it should be an option to add to your ticket when ordering. Then you get some temporary username and password to log on with and activate when you get on the plane and then no longer works when the flight is over. Or, you create a permanent account that only allows you on when you've paid for it. But long story short, I think it's fine to charge for, because I'm sure it's going to be quite costly to implement. Just don't force people to pay for it by adding it to ticket prices.
Anonymous2732
Explorer C
I agree that without plugs the service is useless if you are in the air for more than two hours. My problem is the price of your tickets. I freelance and I usually cannot book my own travel unless it is extremely cost effective to the company paying for it and then they will reimburse me. The companies use travel agents and so SWA is not an option. I am flying soon from Corpus to Chicago and if it were my choice I would go for the over $500 with SWA. I can explain away the cheaper flight on AA because of baggage costs. But Continental's flight is only about $300. So I guess I will be flying on my least favorite airline - again.

SWA should increase fares and give us WiFi for free!! Their new ads could stress NO FEES @ ALL and ITS ON! WiFi, YOUR BAGS, and YOU are ON!

Are you seriously going to charge for internet on your flights?? That's ridiculous and very old school/old paradigm thinking and planning. Who would pay for internet if they were in the air for an average of 2 or so hours on a typical SWA flight? Charging for internet doesn't make sense a forward thinking/growing airline. FREE internet should be your strategic differentiator.

I think it's great the Wi-Fi, but not everyone is going to use it....My wife and I travel a lot for business but we enjoy the time to talk and review things without interuptions. So I hope you don't build the price of the Wi-Fi into the fares. That would obviously not be fair to those passengers not using the service. I also don't care for those that think you should offer it free.....after all this is a business for profit not charity.....Keep up the good work and great service.

I would recommend keeping it simple and just bump the ticket prices with a nominal change across the board until the equipment investment is recouped then hold prices and appreciate the windfall after that time or drop prices and shock everyone! You will get more ROI from the message of yet another feature for everyone flying Southwest Airlines that doesn't have a "sticker" or "nickel & dime" charge attached to it like the other competitors. You could market this issue as something that benefits "everyone", not just business flyers. Smartphones can get updates on emails, websurfing, etc. Laptops users can get family friendly streaming media for kids (to help keep them quite during flights) or information about their destinations during the trip. Make everyone excited about new feature, not panicked over how much it will cost them to use it....spread the cost out to the thinest point and then recoup faster! If you make it a user based fee, you could easily get stuck with a long recoup window. Upgrade the technology and adjust accordingly...we will all appreciate the efforts. Don't draw attention to the incremental fees and details are not required.

Based on the comments in the posts, its obvious that if you open up the discussion as to "how to charge" for the service that whiners will come out of the closet, not wanting to spend another penny beyond today's fare rates. If you go down that path, SW is likely to get stuck with holding the expenses for a long time and being frustrated with having to charge interested flyers with too high of fees, ultimately discouraging and delaying uptake. Simply look to the experiences related to telephone calls from airline equipment installed in planes. Flyers avoided it like the plague and the airlines ate the cost. Don't ask, just blend it into the fold and do you what you have to do to keep current and full featured. The same people who whine about not wanting to pay across the board will also complain about the cost when they really need the service. In the words of NIKE - Just Do It!

Hi MAKE IT FREE - it is on other airlines. Keep us flying, we can not drive to LA and work at the same time. The time it takes to get through security and get a rental car it is almost easier to fly from Nor Cal to So Cal, but if we can work for that time it is another reason to stay Up in the Air vs on the roads. Love the no bag fees and would love it free but would be willing to pay a small fee. thanks for being so awesome!

Great! Please be sure that people cannot somehow use this system to talk on their phones. Insensitive people would be very disruptive to other passengers if they could transact business while flying. People with good manners and judgment would be fine but the potential of loud phone users in a confined space could become a nightmare on flights.

For those who have batteries that don't last long, do you want me to buy you a new battery, too??? Seriously, how about being grateful for the WiFi access and take care of your battery issues yourself!

This is great for a long non stop flight but what if you have a connecting flight with 2 short flights instead of one longer one. I'm sure you won't be able to use it on take-offs and landings. Might only have time to use it for 1/2 hr or so on each leg. Or will you have access to it for a 24 hr time frame?

for ff who reach a certain tier it should be free. maybe offer a monthly plan for those who fly often as well? I dont feelit should be added in the price. most flights I am on I see less than 50% with a computer. Why make others pay for the needs of a few. I would only use on long flights anyway. See no need on commuter flights. I can get enough done with out being connected. Soemtimes it is good not to be connected for a short period.

After reading all of the comments (well, almost all of them), I think it would be wise to build the cost of the wi-fi into the ticket, even if most people won't be using it (I say most, because I don't see an awfully lot of people even using their computers while flying like I do). If it is built in, more people will use it and not feel unjustified in paying for it in their tickets. A lot of people still do not check their bags, but still pay for it (without realizing it). If you decide to charge only the passengers who use it, I would not pay more than $5 for a 2-hour flight. I don't need it that bad. I fly SWA because it saves me money. Additionally, I, too, would like to see which flights have wi-fi before I select my flight, so it should be listed on the flight selection menu. I really appreciate the competitive fares that SWA offers -- even that much more competitive when you consider having to pay a minimum of $25 per bag on the other airlines. Thank you, SWA, for the efforts you make.

WiFi can *not* be totally free if Southwest wants to offer this service long-term, so let's not all make unreasonable requests! It *does* cost a lot of money to install (and operate) such a service! I think a *tiered* charging system that is *not* cumbersome to use might be interesting -- the tiers can be based on a variety of factors such as desire to access WiFi in flight, customer loyalty status (eg, A-List members), and length of use. So if a customer does *not* want to access WiFi in flight then there is *no* excess charge; if A-List members access WiFi then their charges should be lower than the "normal" charge for that flight (eg, 50% lower); the "normal" charge for a flight might be some *reasonable* fixed rate per hour that should *decrease* over time as the initial investments get recouped by Southwest. This way if people need WiFi access for a limited period of time for eMail, or whatever, they needn't pay for the entire duration of their flight, while others who want access for the entire duration of their flight will pay more. We should be able to activate access to this service dynamically via credit cards while on the flight through an authentication system similar to that used in hotels, but with an ability to differentiate A-List members (perhaps through a personalized login ID?). Some conversion rate to "cash in" awarded drink coupon books towards WiFi access time will be a nice accommodation for those who do not, or can not, drink but have, nevertheless, earned their loyalty rewards. One more interesting concept to contemplate -- for those who do *not* have credit cards but would still like to have access to onboard WiFi, Southwest should establish a service similar to PayPal (called SouthwestPay?) as an alternative charging method.

Why not institute a small charge for wi-fi and waive it for Rapid Rewards members who have earned a minimum number of points, and/or for passengers who booked their tickets online...

Once the equipment has been paid for, the Wi-Fi should "Fly Free" for Business Class at least , if not everyone! We already pay more to be Business Select. WiFi is free in many restaurants trying to get our business, WiFi would be another great way to beat the competition!

THIS is going to be great. Please include in price of ticket, maybe based on so much per hour of flight time. Thus less for short hopper flights. I think you will draw even more customers and this will increase your profits and help pay for the installation.

Since my company would reimburse me for the expense and because sometimes as a non-business traveler I like to read or sleep, I would prefer that the cost not be built into the fares. I would love to have the wi-fi capability but ONLY if you provide the ability for me to plug in my laptop charger.

Dear SWA, bring on the WiFi (especially in and out of Orlando). As a business traveler, on-board WiFi would be an outstanding addition. As an "A-List" member, it would be nice if WiFi was 'free' for those of us that spend thousands of dollars per year on SWA flights. Note: AirTran has WiFi but at a cost of $7.95 per flight, I've only used it once on their airlines (SWA should not charge more that $2.95 to $3.95 per flight.....and you'd get plenty more users to off-set the capital cost; just a thought).

Virtually everybody has bags on a flight. A small number will be using wi-fi on a flight. Charge for it, but let us select it on-line when we book our flight. No need to raise ticket prices a few dollars for all people when a minority is using it. A great development, though. Way to go, Southwest!

I've flown every week for 10 years on Southwest. On the rare occasion when i fly on another US carrier I can't fathom how they are still in business; it is amazing to me. Southwest is by far the best US carrier. In 10 years with weekly flights they have been delayed maybe 20 times. The other carriers have been delayed 80% of the time (no exageration). Now service is going to be even better with wi-fi. Southwest is one of the best US companies, a corporation that knows how to get the job done, make a profit and please customers...win/win. Delta, United, American? How do they stay in business? Thanks Southwest; you make my life so much easier. Glad I finally have a public forum to thank you.

OMG!! People~can you be any more "All about me?" BRAVO to Mitch Che - Sat, 02/06/2010 - 23:22 and todd bailey/cardinal health — Sun, 02/07/2010 - 10:58, for being some of the few exceptions. Business Select and A-Listers are so annoying with their "give me, give me" attitudes. Shame on you, Jonas Bare — Sun, 02/07/2010 - 01:12!! Someone please tell me why BS and A Listers are so special?? My money is just as good. Is it because I have less of it?? Or less of it to BURN?! I for one would LOVE to have the money and the TIME to fly 16 round trips in a year (whew), but it's not going to happen anytime soon. It seems that the more you have, the more you expect for free in this life. I guarantee that SWA could not stay in business without the "rest" of us!! WOW, you types (everyone else were named "anonymous" Jonas, I give you respect for posting your name as you were not the only one) just make the rest of us sound less than zero! "Give it free to A-List...., Give it free to Business Select...., charge a nominal fee to the "rest" " EEEWWWWWW.....get OVER yourselves. To Anonymous — Sat, 02/06/2010 - 23:42 regarding the SWA high priced credit card....I get most of my Rapid Rewards by charging my SWA card and paying it off at the end of the month....isn't that how AMEX works?? I therefore cannot speak to the interest rate since they never get the chance to asses it (truly, I don't even know what the rate is). Basically, EVERYTHING I purchase goes on it, cable, cell phone, groceries, gas, even auto insurance, (anything I have to buy/pay for anyway), etc., and it racks up the miles pretty quick~ just a suggestion. Thank you too, for being reasonable enough to know that WiFi should be a choice; a "pay as you go" service and (I myself would use it from time to time) others should not have to foot my bill. In case you were all wondering~clearly I am not Business Select or A List material...sighhh. I say...WIFI=FREE (if SWA can afford it for ALL), DRINK TICKETS, OR CHARGE BY THE INDIVIDUAL, etc. Whatever is fair. Hey...here's a thought. Maybe the A Listers can afford to pay for us all?? There you go, charge A List people and give WiFi free to those of us in economy...Oh Yeah....we are ALL in economy!! And here I was beginning to think there was a difference between us. Maybe SWA can just add a curtain between the bulkhead seats and row 2 for you. Bet you expect us to foot the bill for the fabric and the curtain rod!!

I luv you guys. I recently flew from FLL to PVD to SEA to SNA. The bummer was that I wanted to finish my trip with a red eye so I could get home for the weekend. It was on another carrier. It was amazing in an awful way. They hit me up for $20.00 for my one bag and they seemed to have no sense of urgency. I was flying from San Diego to LAX and then on to FLL. I got in at 10:15 and my flight left at 10:10, The most interesting thing is that there was another flight leaving in 25 minutes but they told me that that was not enough time to change my ticket. Heck you guys can turn around a plane in 25 min or less and they couldn't even change my ticket. In the end I got back at 1pm instead of 6am. Bad choice. Look forward to flying with you next week! A happy customer PS - I love the "A" line.

Wifi is nice but I'm cheap. I bring in an empty water botte to the airport and fill it after I get through security, rather than buy water. I probably won't pay for in-flight wifi when I can read, listen to music, and do puzzles. Please don't raise ticket prices. It sounds like there are plenty of people willing to pay. Thanks for reading all the comments. Southwest is the best airline by far.
