LUV Rations Delivery

In a previous blog by Shelley Logan, you've heard about our efforts and events surrounding this past 4th of July. One of those events was called LUV Rations. It focused on collecting supplies for our brave soldiers in Iraq and other far away locations and for the children in those countries who our soldiers LUV so much.

We ended up gathering enough supplies for more than a thousand goodie bags  and we packed them in boxes, each containing personal post cards from Employees, Family Members, and Friends of Southwest.

This video shows the official delivery of the boxes to our military, and you’ll notice that most of the people who turned out for the event were dressed in red. That’s because it was on Friday, and we dress in red to show our support for our military every Friday. You also might notice that many of our Employees brought their children to work with them for the event.

Plane Hovering Over Trucks

The video pretty much speaks for itself, but this is one of the times I really wish you could watch the original HD version of the video. If you look very carefully, you’ll see a Southwest Airlines plane appearing to hover over the trucks as they turn onto the road that parallels the Love Field runway. In the HD version, you can see the bright landing lights and the colors of the plane, but in this version, it’s just a gray blur. So … when you watch, use your imagination.

And if you get a lump in your throat as you watch, join the club!

WOW! .... after watching that video all I can say is, our new boarding procedure, whether you like it or not seems sooo trivial in the larger picture of the world. Take some time now to count the blessing's you have! Practice a random act of kinddess for someone today!

Thanks, Joe! Sharing HD video is pretty tough these days. The HD file is about 685MB, whereas the one you're watching is probably about 10-15MB; it's hard to know exactly because YouTube reprocesses everything that is uploaded. Plus, you'd need a very high-powered PC or an HD-DVD player to watch it. And then you'd need an HD TV. It was a very expensive "snowball effect" when I started upgrading all my equipment for HD:-( But the good news is, I'm constantly learning and working on new ways to improve the actual and perceived quality of what I post.

Francisco, Be sure to let all your buddies see the video. We want them to know how much support they have at Southwest and lots of other places "back home."

DING Boy Joe, The "SEA J5 SUMMA..." is the usual flight plan for a delivery flight from Boeing to Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. It can also be the flight plan for a newly repainted 737 return to Phoenix from PAE or it could be a flight plan for one of your three regularly scheduled non-stops from Seattle to Phoenix.

Correct Scott, It was a delivery flight as far as I could tell. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA8501 Bob, 685 mb on a cable modem ought to take about four hours and cause my computer to implode. No, I didn't mean explode ;-) My isp probably wouldn't like it either! Ding! boy Joe

Hey guys, At 12:06 AM and 12:15 AM CDT, you sent over two planes over to Victorville from Phoenix Where as I type, they still are. Any idea why they are there?

Scott The flights to Victorville (VCV) were ferry positioning flights. My guess is that they flew a military charter from VAV. Brian

There's a flight on the board with an etd of 4:10 PM CDT from Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage, AK. Are you expecting passengers from that flight?

I am disappointed that Southwest Airlines would work so hard to help our Troops and yet seemingly condone actions taken against our returning "Heroes" by Oakland Airport. Don't you LUV that? Kim Flood - Angry American

Kim, The incident to which you refer involved a charter airline and the Port of Oakland. Southwest wasn't involved. We do work hard to help our Troops because many of our Coworkers are in their ranks, and we have Coworkers, who were our friends, give the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country. Brian
