My Campus Reach Internship, through the Lens

No matter where you're from, when you think of New York City, powerful imagery comes to mind. Whether it's a busy street full of people walking like they know where they're going or the lights of Times Square, the iconic images all tell a similar story. As the Brand Communication Summer Intern here at Southwest, I’ve been thinking a lot about the story Southwest tells as a brand. Working on my Team, I’ve come to understand just how much effort goes into making sure Southwest’s Values and personality come through in all communication, and it’s been very rewarding work, to say the least.

Early into my internship, I learned that my Team was preparing for a photoshoot to add new Employee and Customer photography to our asset library. My Team’s bold vision for these images made me even more excited to be a part of the project, and before I knew it, it was time to pack our bags and head to New York City.

The shoot was at Milk Studios in the Meatpacking District, and I quickly discovered that Milk Studios is the definition of cool (if you don’t believe me check out their Instagram, @Milk). We were in a spacious room with multiple sets, a wardrobe area, and a DJ. Each production day was a sea of movement and noise. From the ever-moving production and wardrobe crews, to the click of the photographer’s camera, and the DJ’s sweet beats, the well-orchestrated chaos was invigorating. Our Team was active throughout the entire shoot, providing feedback and ensuring the images suited our vision.

Leading up to the shoot, I got to join in onmilk 2.jpg decisions like casting and set designs. I also worked on logistics like securing props and Employee uniforms. The words Short Sleeve Chambray Shirt, Signature Dress, and marshalling wands, among others, are now etched in my memory. It felt great to lead on these logistics and see everything fall into place. On set, I got to help our Employee cast with anything they needed and make sure they were relaxed. Everyone knows how special Southwest Employees are, so it should come as no surprise to learn that they shined in front of the camera, just as they do in the airport and inflight.

It was a gift to get such tangible takeaways from my internship at Southwest; but more than that, it will be an honor to see images that boldly capture the Heart of our Employees and Customers come to life and tell Southwest Airlines’ story.
