Operational Impact of Sandy - Updated Monday, Oct. 29, 12pm CDT

Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways have canceled or modified operations at a total of 16 airports in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic US. Affected Customers continue to be contacted and offered options to change their travel plans. Click the links at the bottom of this statement for the most up-to-date Customer policies.

Southwest has canceled a total of 887 flights from Sunday evening through midday Wednesday.

AirTran Airways has canceled a total of 278 flights from Sunday evening through midday Wednesday.

To provide context, Southwest Airlines was scheduled to operate more than 3200 flights across the Country each weekday this week; AirTran Airways currently has a published systemwide flight schedule of nearly 600 flights a day.

Operational planners are still determining the flight schedules for both carriers beyond the timeframe described above.

Operational Impact of Sandy - Updated Sunday, Oct. 28, 5pm CDT

Out ahead of the projected landfall of Hurricane Sandy, Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways have canceled operations on Monday at a total of ten airports in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic US.  Customers are being contacted and offered options to change their travel plans.  Click the links at the bottom of this statement for the most up-to-date Customer policies.

Southwest has canceled a total of 58 flights (less than two percent of the published schedule) on Sunday evening, mainly the last inbound flights in the affected airports.  Similarly, AirTran Airways has canceled 23 flights (four percent of the published schedule) Sunday evening.  These are final numbers for Sunday.

On Monday, Southwest Airlines was scheduled to operate more than 3200 flights across the Country and now projects to have canceled more than 550 of those departures.  AirTran Airways projects to have canceled more than 180 departures out of a published systemwide flight schedule of nearly 600 flights on Monday.

Operational planners are still determining the Tuesday flight schedules for both carriers.

Operational Impact of Sandy - Updated Saturday, Oct. 27, 10am CDT 

We are closely monitoring weather conditions in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and are posting updates about the operating status and flexible travel accommodations for both Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways.

As of midday Saturday, the projected path of Hurricane Sandy has both Southwest and AirTran offering some Customers an opportunity to change their travel plans out of ahead of landfall.  Click the hyperlinks below for specifics.  

Both carriers continue to operate their full flight schedules in all cities.

Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways continue to monitor conditions associated with Hurricane Sandy.

At this time, both Southwest and AirTran are operating scheduled service to/from all their respective locations.
