1 LUV, Heart, and a Warrior Spirit are all at the center of both Southwest Airlines and Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Not many people get the opportunity to be a part of the Team that brings these two cultures together, but I also have the added privilege of being reunited with family in the process. My name is Jesus Hernandez, Social Care Representative at Southwest and I’d like to share the story of a beautiful struggle that has come full circle for me and my family.    I am the youngest of five siblings and the only one of my family to be a first generation American citizen after my family migrated to Dallas, Texas from Jalisco, Mexico. We come from a family of travelers. My grandfather arrived in Mexico with his family from Spain in the early 1900’s and later moved to the US around the time of the Mexican Revolution. My father, Ismael Hernandez Guerrero, was born in La Labor de Solis, Jalisco, a village so small they had limited electricity and running water just outside of the major metropolitan area of Guadalajara, Mexico. He met my mother, Maria Jova Rodriguez Olvera there, married, and soon after started a family of their own raising my three brothers and sister.3From 1968 to 1974, my father traveled between Mexico and the US, working and sending money to my mom before finally gaining enough stability in the U.S. for them to join him. Not an easy task I’m sure, and working as a scrap metal yard foreman for 35 years was certainly not any easier. My mother worked many jobs, ranging from a meat packing plant laborer to working on an assembly line at an auto parts manufacturing facility to eventually becoming the COO of the Hernandez household.
My own journey has been nowhere near the struggle and subsequent beauty that my parents endured.
In speaking to my mom just the other day about where our paths have taken us, she managed to sum it perfectly stating, “I’d rather suffer here on earth than to suffer when I’m laid to rest.”. They managed to raise a family of five children in a foreign land; leaving behind their home and family in Mexico; getting by on limited English; and making do with only an elementary education, all while laying a foundation built on love, faith and a beautiful sense of creativity.2 That foundation has driven my own desire to create through the eyes of a camera and has fueled my passion for photography, using the unique lenses created by my family’s heritage and enjoying a life seen through many different perspectives. This passion has cultivated an ability to make a conscious choice of perceiving challenges as something beneficial so we can deal with them in the most productive way.
My parents took a chance on faith and never wavered from sharing the love and support that has helped me tremendously along my own path.
Which brings us full circle back to a place our family’s journey has brought us. Today, because of my family’s love, Heart, and Warrior Spirit, I have the opportunity to work for Southwest and take part in this celebration. I can share my present with my past and bring my work family and the family of my heart together. So with that, Puerto Vallarta meet Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines meet Puerto Vallarta. Salud!

Spanish Version:

Con ello quiero decir, Puerto Vallarta, te presento a Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines, te presento a Puerto Vallarta. Salud.
