RICE-A-RONI, ANYONE?

This August…..the Southwest Airlines route map will no longer be "Sans Francisco." Just as we promised, we're bringing our LUV Jets back to San Francisco International Airport (SFO)! Effective on Sunday, August 26th, Southwest begins nonstop service between SFO and San Diego, Las Vegas, and Chicago Midway, with direct or connecting service to 46 additional airports from sea to shining sea. We'll offer eight flights each weekday between SFO and San Diego; seven each weekday between SFO and Las Vegas; and three each day between SFO and Chicago Midway. Southwest's SFO service will operate from Terminal 1, Concourse B, gates 25 and 31.  (Click here for more details.) No airline LUVs California like Southwest does, and our new SFO service means there's more of us to LUV. These 18 new departures from SFO, combined with our 148 weekday departures from Oakland International Airport and our 80 flights from San Jose's Norman Mineta International, mean that by the end of the summer we'll have nearly 250 flights each business day from the Bay Area–including 137 departures to Southern California alone! Fares and schedules are now available, so happy booking…and have a great weekend, everyone!

Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. You're going to meet some gentle people there.

PLEASE ! I am so happy you are fying out of SFO! BUT, I need to go to Boise Direct-non stop. I know, I know, you fly there from Oakland, but it is so hard for us to get to that airport. Any CHANCE you'll be flying to Boise from SFO anytime soon? LOVE YA!

No Ontario flights????

I'm not surprised. It's as much about available planes as anything else. SFO-BWI would be an eventual addition, to be sure, for excellent linkage up here to Manchester and also to Providence (not to mention ALB, ISP, and BDL). Indeed, from MHT to the west coast the only best choice is one-stop connecting service via United. SFO-BWI-MHT I'm sure would time in a little better in terms of total elapsed time. As long as the planes come, so too will the routes. Chris in NH

I am happy to hear the news as I fly to Oakland twice a month. Even though they are not in Ontario, CA but probably will be soon. SF to East bay without taking the Airbart sound great and hopefully will happen soon. Southwest rocks!! for their low fares and I dont care what other say..Keep up the good work!..knock..knock..on wood!

Hmm, "about 90 employees" for 2 gates and 18 flights. Elsewhere on southwest.com it says 79 employees in DTW for 4 gates. So, the employees in dtw work harder or is 79 an outdated number? ;-P The total due exceeds the available balance. Please insert more money. Ding! boy Joe

I'd be grateful for a nonstop to St. Louis. There's only AAL right now.

Nice job, Schedule Planning!!!! Especially considering the online speculation on start dates, yesterday's announcement proves we can still keep a secret (DARN!!) Hey Jedi, "Greg" is ALL about IAD service, ie: additional flights. You can find LOTS of postings at USAviation.com. Will Browne MDW F/A

The lack of a coast to coast non-stop from SFO is not surprising when you think about it. Remember, Southwest has built up OAK as a significant focus city (if they'll let us call it that - the term might be too closely associated with a hub-and-spoke system for their comfort). Anywho, the point is that SFO is supposed to compliment, not cannibalize, the airline's existing (and plentiful) offerings at OAK.

CHRIS BAKER ... This is not a blog to make fun of someone else's personal choice. Haven't you ever heard of the golden rule? Greg if you look at the new schedule i see plenty of SFO to the East coast. relax, non-stop flights will come.. supply and demand... USS BLOG BOY

Since everyone else hems and haws about service to their respective airports, I am going to toss out a thought, that also has nothing to do with rice a roni - I am moving to MIA from LAX in two weeks. SW needs to come to MIA and institute a nonstop from MIA to ISP. I don't want to drive to FLL for my flight to ISP. There !! I said it !!

Just tried to add SFO to my "list of up to 10 airports" for DING earlier today, SFO's not there yet. When will SFO be "live" on DING? I wouldn't expect an SFO-BWI nonstop until at least another OAK-BWI nonstop is added first. Also, when can we expect an announcement for additional service for IAD?

>> USSBlogBoy, Chris wasn't making fun of anyone....that line is from a very poplular folk song The song was also featured in Forrest Gump. http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/forrestgump/sanfranciscobesuretowearsomeflowersinyourhair.htm

Have we got "seminar IAD commenters" or something? If you really want more flights out of IAD, you need to send snail-mail to the PTB at Southwest who can make that happen! I don't think any SWA employees here have that power. And besides, SWA may only have so many gates at IAD to work with. Until then, is BWI really that far? And don't forget, you can take Amtrak or MARC to BWI. Or a shuttle from the Greenbelt Metro. Give it a rest! You're not going to get more flights from IAD yesterday.

Bill, Congratulations on MORE great news from your department! You guys are awesome and I know that a LOT of work and sweat went into ironing out the logistics to return to SFO. I wish folks like "Greg" would look at the positive instead of the negative -- the glass is half FULL, Greg! I don't see any nonstops from DAL to London, either, but I ain't fussin' about it! Jean, You've gotta understand, our pal USS Blog Boy is just a young whippersnapper and that song predates him by a few decades! Only us ancient geezers remember those golden oldies. Of course, the good side to that is that when WE had US history in school, we only had about half as much to learn as our naval buddy did! Bill, (a P. S.) Even though the grammatical humor was funny, we'll still be "Sans Francisco" until the USS Nimitz returns to the States! But, he's still in our hearts and on our blog! Kim External Blog Boy 🙂

I'm really glad to see that SFO is finally launched. Unfortunately, no LAX-SFO or BUR-SFO yet, but that would be a godsend for my monthly commute from southern CA to northern CA. Maybe next schedule extension... *crosses fingers*

In the fall when more gates and planes are available for SFO, I am hoping for SFO-ONT or BUR. Maybe 4 r/t for each. I have decided to ask for one route though, LAS-FLL. Please. Schedule Planning does an awesome job!!!!!

So glad to see the new service to San Francisco. It is truly exciting and I know it will grow. Would love to see Southwest have a non-stop flight between Las Vegas and Ft. Lauderdale.

I have a concern. YEARS ago Southwest flew out of SFO and they pulled the plug because delays at SFO were creating delays all throughout the system. This is because Southwest's flights are more circuituous than most airlines (a single plane will fly from SFO->San Diego->Saint Louis->Birmingham->Chicago). 1 hour behind at SFO means 1 hour behnd in Birmingham with a possible cancellation in Chicago. How has Southwest addressed this issue? Will

I am wondering about Ding Fares...If past is a predictor of the future will I still be able to get great rates from PVD to MCO or BVD to MCO in Sept...And Jedi Blog Master PLEASE don't tell me that "Hard to see is the future, always changing..." 😉 know this I do.

Great news about SFO!! Do you know how much business you'd get if you flew out of Pensacola? There are at least 4 Military bases (that I know of) within an hours drive of there.....and those guys and gals love to go home to visit!! I can't tell you how old it gets for them to drive all the way to New Orleans (4 hours one way) to catch a Southwest flight. I hate to say it, but I've started booking flights on other airlines for my son who's in the Air Force when he comes home to visit. So, when's PNS coming to your schedule?????

I just had someone tell me that LUV may be coming to Macon Ga. as a replacement airline since Delta is pulling out? Anyone know anything? I will book a month in advance, I hate Delta but have no other choice for a direct flight. Come on east LUV and show how a good airline works.
