In North Texas nothing says, “It’s Fall!” more than the Texas State Fair and football.  And the Red River Rivalry—where the University of Texas (UT) goes head-to-head with the University of Oklahoma (OU) at the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas—brings these two things together in a way that will make you wave your Fletcher’s corny dog in the air and root, root, root for either the Longhorns or the Sooners.

For the ninth year, Southwest kicked off the TX/OU weekend with a one-of-a-kind pep rally to support both teams—the Southwest Pigskin Plane Pull.  More than 500 Southwest Employees came out to Southwest’s Maintenance Hangar to watch Fellow Employees compete on behalf of UT or OU to see who could pull an 83,000-pound Boeing 737 across 50 yards the fastest.  As fans and cheerleaders from both universities cheered the teams on, this year’s competition was fierce and the closest in plane pull history, with Team OU beating UT by 3/100 of a second!

Regardless of who won or lost, everyone had a great time cheering for each other.  After all, when it comes down to it, we’re all on the same Team—Team Southwest!  Now, pass me the fried bubblegum!*

*Yes, Folks—you read correctly.  Fried bubblegum is a real Texas State Fair food!  It’s a bubble gum-flavored marshmallow dipped in batter, lightly fried, and decorated with a swirl of icing and a sprinkling of powdered sugar.  Wow—that's some Fair fare!
