SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ENTER INTO SLOT LEASE AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EWR)

DALLAS—Aug. 27, 2010—Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines confirmed today that they entered into a lease providing Southwest Airlines access to 36 Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) slots which are currently held by Continental.

The lease deal, contingent upon the closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger by Nov. 30, 2010, and certain governmental approvals, would give Southwest Airlines the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark, New Jersey, with some flights beginning in March 2011 and a full schedule in place by June 2011. The slots are spread throughout the day and would allow Southwest the ability to integrate Newark service conveniently into its extensive national route network.

“We are excited by the opportunity to initiate service from Newark, New Jersey, and we plan to enable that service starting next March through continued flight schedule optimization using our existing fleet,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “We’ve seen tremendous demand for Southwest Airlines in the New York City/Newark area in the past year.  Customers are clamoring for our unique brand of hospitality, great value, low fares, extensive flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver outstanding Customer Service. Adding Newark provides an excellent complement to our LaGuardia and Long Island service, giving Customers one more option for travel to and from the greater New York City/New Jersey area. This service also will provide a needed injection of low fares and competition into the New York/Newark market.”

Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Continental and United Airlines to finalize arrangements for commencing its Newark service in March 2011, including the approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities.  Details on what cities Southwest will serve from Newark and on what dates that service will begin have not yet been determined.

“The divestiture of slots at Newark by the combined Continental/United will ensure competition is enhanced, and we appreciate the Department of Justice’s role in finding a fair solution,” Jordan said.

After 39 years of service, Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service.  Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and currently serves 69 cities in 35 states. Southwest also is one of the most honored airlines in the world, known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/cares to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™.  Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has nearly 35,000 Employees systemwide.  When shopping for Southwest online, it's important to know that Southwest Airlines’ low fares are only available at http://www.southwest.com/?src=PREMNASEWRANNOUNC100827.

This news release contains forward-looking statements related to Southwest’s lease of slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and its related plans and expectations. I love Southwest and am too excited for words about the additional competition this will add for the Newark destination. Newark is my choice for NYC travel. Wouldn't it be the cat's meow if you find a way to consistently offer those super low fares you are known for and make the competition squirm!!!

I was so excited to hear this news. I used to wish that Southwest would come to Newark so that I could make a flight without waiting an extra day. We travel frequently to Fort Myers. FL from NJ. It's tough to find a non-stop flight and due to my job in a school, I cannot leave early ever before a holiday weekend to have time to drive 90 minutes to Philly. Continental's flights that are nonstop leave too early in the day for me to get to Newark, 45 minutes away or by train to the plane which takes about 90 minutes from where I live in Monmouth county. Then I have to park and get to the terminal and wonder how long the security line will be. I just found flights that work for me in November out of Atlantic City (since they added another flight per day to their route) but it's almost 90 minutes to get there and then the parking deal, although I was thrilled I can go nonstop and make the flight time. Going to Kennedy or LaGuardia is a nightmare with traffic and would take at least 90 minutes. A non-stop flight out of Newark to Ft.Myers leaving around 6 pm would be great!!!! Leaving Ft. Myers around 7 or 8 pm nonstop to Newark would be a dream!!!! Maximum time on my vacation! We flew Southwest once out of Philly in the summer when I could be flexible with my time and the airline was GREAT! I am hoping that my Easter vacation in April will have me on a nonstop flight from Newark to Ft. Myers and back!

As a fellow New Yorker and knowing the three airports, we have been using Newark as our airport of choice. Now living in San Diego, I am glad that we will be able to take Southwest into the new York Metro area. Thank you SOUTHWEST!!!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You and a BIG Thank You from a Southwest Airline fan and flyer from Tucson, AZ. that goes to Newark at least 2 X a year. I have had to endure American Airlines horrible service with delays averaging 4 hours. Now could you please have flights scheduled on more days of the week. A direct flight would also.be fabulous. Maybe one to Portland, Oregon too would be on my wish list. I love Southwest's customer service, flight service, and everything about the airline.

Please consider Melbourne, FL. This is your kind of international airport. Tons of people live that live in the Vero Beach area would fly SW out of Melbourne to the northeast and the rest of the country. I know this because I drive these people to Orlando and Palm Beach every day of the week. The drive from Vero to Melbourne is 30 minutes and the drive to Orlando is 1 3/4 hrs. Palm Beach is about the same

GO, SOUTHWEST, GO!!! Southwest is particularly close to my heart. In 1966 I established a travel agency dedicted not to quantity but to quality, naive enough not to know that quality brought quantity and today I am still enjoying my work as I did the first day I went into the travel industry. When Southwest started with 25.00 fares, not many travel professionals wanted to make $1.99 commission on this fare, but I felt if it brought in clients, maybe next time they would book a trip around the world, who could know! So, I sold Southwest tickets right and left. As I like to write letters of commendation - and I did so many times to our good friend, Herb, he now calls me "Cousin Stella", and I treasure this mre thatn I can tell you. Every trip I take on Southwest, is a wonderful and memorable expereince. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, KEEP THEM COMING! Stella Cottrell

We've been making the trip to NJ for 25 years, and now we get to fly the best. You go SWA.

A non stop from Phoenix to Newark would be great! Then all you would have to do is get some reasonably priced rental cars there and you can have a good piece of the market for sure. I avoid the NY airports i.e. LGA where SW now goes because of the price of the rental cars.

That is great. . .but whatever happened to all the talk about coming to Pensacola, Mobile or Fort Walton. I LOVE flying Southwest, but there is nothing closer than 2 hours from me in Pensacola : ( We really need something closer. We had rallies, meetings, and even went as far as pledging to fly and then nothing . . .

Outstanding! We have family in NJ and I HATE flying into PHL (or driving from BWI). This may be the only silver lining to the UA-CO merger. Damn yankee in Austin

Currently spending $1100 per round trip to NJ on Continental operating regional 50 seat jets out of Nashville. Will be thrilled when SWA begins flights to Newark on the 737. Can't happen soon enough.

I have only been lucky enough to fly Southwest one time and that was to Arizona. I hope that your airline considers making a stop or two in the Midwest - like Lansing, Michigan and/or Dayton, Ohio. My east coast friends and family have a hard time getting to those cities for a reasonable price Good luck. I will be waiting to see theschedule.

Was I dreaming, or did I really see an article that stated you were going to start flying to South Carolina in 2011? Please tell me it's for real. We fly to Myrtle Beach every year to visit parents and the beach!!!!!

How will Southwest handle those weather delays at Newark? I have driven by on the turnpike on clear, non-windy days and have heard on the radio of those delays. With such a well run company, onehas to question the wisdom of this decission.
