Carrier Selects Charleston and Greenville-Spartanburg--No Subsidies Required

May 11, 2010--Southwest Airlines today announced its intent to serve the state of South Carolina—without subsidies—through the cities of Charleston (CHS) and Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) in 2011. Southwest will release details regarding start dates, destinations and fares, and number of departures at a later date.  The airline’s service will not be dependent on pending legislation to provide air service subsidies. For more information about Southwest Airlines, click here.

“We look forward to serving the Palmetto State with Southwest Airlines’ unique brand of genuine hospitality, great value, a robust and reliable flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver excellent Customer Service,” said Dave Ridley, Southwest’s senior vice president of marketing and revenue management.

Southwest reported a profitable start to the year with its First Quarter 2010 financial results last month. At that time, Southwest said overall demand for its Low Fares and high quality Customer Service remained strong, resulting in a record first quarter performance for load factor, passenger yield, operating unit revenue, and passenger revenues.  Southwest attributed the notable performance to its network optimization and revenue management efforts, which also have allowed it to grow in destinations without growing its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. The carrier intends to continue that growth strategy in 2011, keeping its capacity relatively flat with 2010.

After 38 years of service, Southwest Airlines, the nation’s leading low-fare carrier where bags fly free, continues to stand above other airlines—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the most productive airline in the sky and offers Customers a comfortable traveling experience with all premium leather seats and plenty of legroom. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) currently serves 68 cities in 35 states and is the largest U.S. carrier, based on domestic passengers carried. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide.

Southwest flying from CHS- it doesn't get any better! With Charleston's new economic factors, including weekly cruise ship service, a Boeing Assembly Plant, and a Wind Turbine Testing Facility in addition to the all the other much appreciated assets, I know this will be a successsful service. WELCOME SOUTHWEST!!!

Always knew GSP was a great location for SWA. Definately Chicago, who else is on the ns list? Phoenix? St Louis? Las Vegas? Baltimore? Either way, I'm so pumped they are coming to GSP!!

First of all I hate flying anything but southwest, by far the best! My fiance is in the military and we are currently in two different states. Southwest has made it reasonably priced and so easy for me to take off and see him on a regular basis, so THANK YOU! Flights into charleston made my day! I have family in charleston, and we always had to fly into jacksonville and rent a car. My fiance and I are planning our wedding next year in charleston and this will make the planning/flying everyone in sooo much easier. You've definitley taken a lot of stress off of this bride to be!

You have NO IDEA how happy this makes me! I am literally already planning a fun weekend get-away with my fiancee and a girls' trip with my college girlfriends. Charleston SC is one of my favorite cities in the US, but I couldn't ever justify the flight cost when I knew I could fly to San Francisco (from DC!) for less. THANK YOU SOUTHWEST AIRLINES!!!!!

Please fly in/out of Columbia, SC. Many of us from the Augusta area use Columbia as our main Gateway for airlines. The more choices=Lower costs for everyone! Thank you!!

I love Southwest Airlines. In order for me to take advantage of your flights, I need to drive from Cincinnati, OH to Indianapolis. Would love to have SW fly out of Cincy since my daughter is expecting my first grandchild and I plan on making the trip to Phoenix often so that I can be a part of my grandchild's life.

Excited about your service coming to Upstate, SC. I live in Asheville, but I'm more than willing to make the drive to fly on your airline. My family has already been making the drive to Raleigh, and still saving money. This is even better, and I believe, a sound business decisions for Southwest.

HOORAY!!! I am SO excited! I just heard on the local news that you all are coming to Greenville, SC (GSP). As a former Californian who enjoyed each & every flight I took with SWA, I can't wait until you are here. We have so many friends and family in San Diego, CA and look forward to your usual GREAT service and, of course, GREAT fares. Thank you so much for choosing GSP. A VERY satisfied customer, Sherry Borchers

I've been a SWA fan for years, flying from Bham to Hobby in Houston. Glad you're adding Greenville/Spartenburg and Charleston to the cities you service. Just wish you were adding Columbia, where I have many relatives.

I am glad to hear you are flying to SC, but would have liked to see Myrtle Beach in the list. In lieu of that, you would make my heart sing if you opened up service to Dayton. My daughter has to fly another airline to her father's. We would much prefer you guys.

We have been waiting for this for a long time. We have had to drive to Birmingham, Nashville or Raleigh to catch flights. Our Texas relatives live in Dallas and this is great news. We have always enjoyed flying SWA over all the other airlines. Herb is my hero.
