Carrier Selects Charleston and Greenville-Spartanburg--No Subsidies Required

May 11, 2010--Southwest Airlines today announced its intent to serve the state of South Carolina—without subsidies—through the cities of Charleston (CHS) and Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) in 2011. Southwest will release details regarding start dates, destinations and fares, and number of departures at a later date.  The airline’s service will not be dependent on pending legislation to provide air service subsidies. For more information about Southwest Airlines, click here.

“We look forward to serving the Palmetto State with Southwest Airlines’ unique brand of genuine hospitality, great value, a robust and reliable flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver excellent Customer Service,” said Dave Ridley, Southwest’s senior vice president of marketing and revenue management.

Southwest reported a profitable start to the year with its First Quarter 2010 financial results last month. At that time, Southwest said overall demand for its Low Fares and high quality Customer Service remained strong, resulting in a record first quarter performance for load factor, passenger yield, operating unit revenue, and passenger revenues.  Southwest attributed the notable performance to its network optimization and revenue management efforts, which also have allowed it to grow in destinations without growing its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. The carrier intends to continue that growth strategy in 2011, keeping its capacity relatively flat with 2010.

After 38 years of service, Southwest Airlines, the nation’s leading low-fare carrier where bags fly free, continues to stand above other airlines—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the most productive airline in the sky and offers Customers a comfortable traveling experience with all premium leather seats and plenty of legroom. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) currently serves 68 cities in 35 states and is the largest U.S. carrier, based on domestic passengers carried. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide.

Am a Platinum Medallion flyer with another airline currently serving Charleston, SC. Have heard glowing comments about your airline for years from colleagues; have signed up for a SW Frequent Flyer Number. Welcome to Charleston.

It's great to hear SWA will be flying to Charleston SC! I just flew to Raleigh-Durham but went to Conway, SC and that's the most frugal flight with the 2 free bags is fantastic! Also, the customer service at all levels; phone center, skycaps, airline attendants, etc. were all friendly and happy to work there is the impression I got! :) Also, SWA website is really user-friendly and I like the set up of it! You guys are great! Thank you!

I was so excited to hear the news you picked GSP. My entire family lives in Miami Fl and I hate that I have to travel to ATL to find a cheaper flight.

I can't wait for the Greenville SC and Charleston SC flights to open up! I'm assuming they'll all have connectors in BWI from PVD, but I can live with that. Any chance the flights will be running by May?

My husband and I live in Tacoma, WA and travel yearly to Clemson to visit my family. Loving that we can now afford to fly into GSP! No more ATL/CLT for us. Thanks, SWA.

Great news. Thank you SWA! You truly are the best...too bad I have to fly to SC next week and it won't be on SWA...yet. Keep up the good work.

I hope Southwest will consider direct flights from Greenville and Charleston to Marsh Harbour, Bahamas. Many people from SC travel to that area and there is a tremendous need for direct flights. Currently, there are NO direct flights from anywhere in the SC area to Marsh Harbour.

We need you at ILM! New Hanover County is a great market and you only service the triangle. Your fans on the coast are in need of your presence or Myrtle Beach if the ILM doesn't work! Please comment on the possibility. Thanks. Riley

I was told on a Southwest flight earlier this year that Southwest would offer direct flights from Denver to Greenville/Spartanburg and Charleston. I see that flights are available from Denver to Greenville Spartanburg beginning March 13, 2011, but they are not direct - they have connections. When should we expect the direct flights to begin?

We live in Gibsonville NC. We fly Southwest everytime we fly to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Pa. It is the best airline by far. We would like to see you come to Greensboro (GSO) because it would be a much shorter drive to the airport.

Its a shame that there is NOTHING that flies into the Great Parks of the Dakotas, Wyoming or Montana.  There MUST be a market for Jackson Hole or Rapid City?  Denver is as close as u come...

FlyOver States are IMPORTANT, too.
