Carrier Selects Charleston and Greenville-Spartanburg--No Subsidies Required

May 11, 2010--Southwest Airlines today announced its intent to serve the state of South Carolina—without subsidies—through the cities of Charleston (CHS) and Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) in 2011. Southwest will release details regarding start dates, destinations and fares, and number of departures at a later date.  The airline’s service will not be dependent on pending legislation to provide air service subsidies. For more information about Southwest Airlines, click here.

“We look forward to serving the Palmetto State with Southwest Airlines’ unique brand of genuine hospitality, great value, a robust and reliable flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver excellent Customer Service,” said Dave Ridley, Southwest’s senior vice president of marketing and revenue management.

Southwest reported a profitable start to the year with its First Quarter 2010 financial results last month. At that time, Southwest said overall demand for its Low Fares and high quality Customer Service remained strong, resulting in a record first quarter performance for load factor, passenger yield, operating unit revenue, and passenger revenues.  Southwest attributed the notable performance to its network optimization and revenue management efforts, which also have allowed it to grow in destinations without growing its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. The carrier intends to continue that growth strategy in 2011, keeping its capacity relatively flat with 2010.

After 38 years of service, Southwest Airlines, the nation’s leading low-fare carrier where bags fly free, continues to stand above other airlines—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the most productive airline in the sky and offers Customers a comfortable traveling experience with all premium leather seats and plenty of legroom. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) currently serves 68 cities in 35 states and is the largest U.S. carrier, based on domestic passengers carried. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide.

OMG! That is so wonderful. I am Active Duty Military and was just reassigned from Seattle to SC. I am so happy I don't know what to do. Please, please tell me when the service will start. Will there be a non-stop from Oakland to Charleston, or from Seattle to Charleston. When I travel with the military and have to fly another airline I literrally start to SOB that's how bad the service is on other airlines. Thank you from the bottom of my hear.

I have always wished you would have service as I have lived in Ca. for a long time . I still have friends in Charleston and love the city. I went to school there and the people are so nice. We always had to take rinky dink flights from Atlanta. It was so expensive. You should make a lot of money since Boeing is moving there from Washington.

So excited! Southwest is one of the things I have missed the most since I moved to Charleston from Houston. I got spoiled with how easy it was to fly anywhere from Houston. I grew up in Kansas City and trying to get home easily and cheaply from here has been next to impossible. Can't wait to fly home more often!

Please consider a flight from GSP to PDX. I have family across the river in Vancouver, WA and a direct flight there on SWA would make it much more convenient and affordable to visit them. Thanks for coming to GSP!

Also, GSP to MHT would also be fantastic. I know many people who have family in NH, and, there are many people here in the upstate who would love to go to Boston via MHT.

I was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas, and have not flown back very often because of the hastle of driving, changing planes, etc. We have driven there more often than we would like--it would be so nice to have Southwest near so that we can fly. I do hope that it will be possible to fly from Greenville, SC to Amarillo without all of the inconveniences now. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.

Fly to Iowa! Either Cedar Rapids or Des Moines...Southwest would be phenomenal to either airport. There's such a huge demand for Southwest in Iowa!

I have lived in Charleston my whole life and just moved to Columbus OH. So if SW will get flights between the two going in 2011, I will have very happy family in SC. It is a long drive and flying would allow us to go home more, but with paying for 4 people, flying with any other airline is just out of the question. I NEED YOU IN CHARLESTON SW!!!!!!!

I have driven from Greenville to Raleigh twice per month for 2-1/2 years to fly Southwest to my companies various locations. This will positively impact my business more than you could ever know. By the way, I fly to 17 Southwest locations, and have always had to drive the 3-1/2 hours to hitch a ride at RDU!!!! WOW- talk about being excited about MY airline coming to GSP!!!! Thank You x 1,000,000,000,000,000,000.....well, you get the picture!!!!
