A.J. Davis might look familiar to you. He’s a Southwest Airlines Pilot, and he might even be flying your plane right now! A.J., a Baltimore/Washington–based First Officer, joined the Southwest Family six years ago. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Navy for more than 22 years.

In the fall of 2011, A.J.’s Servant’s Heart won him Southwest’s Winning Spirit Award, which is given to Employees who go above and beyond the call of duty.  For A.J., this involved taking time during an overnight layover to build an access ramp for a Customer’s quadriplegic brother. This gesture allowed the Customer’s brother to get his mobility back and have full access around his house.

Outside of work, A.J. LUVs to spend quality time with his family and is actively involved in his son’s Boy Scout troop. A.J. realized just how important his family was when it was threatened five years ago. His son, Logan, was diagnosed at age 7 with a very aggressive form of cancer. A.J. is thankful for the travel benefits Southwest gives him and his family and recognizes that without them Logan wouldn’t have been able to see the best doctors in the country. He is forever grateful for his Southwest Family and all of the LUV and support he and his family have received over the past five years. “My Southwest Family is always there, willing to help, whether or not I ask for it,” he says.

Fortunately, after battling cancer and kidney failure, Logan is now cancer-free and recovering.  If you ever have the pleasure of meeting A.J., you’ll find that his great stories and dry sense of humor will make you laugh and keep a smile on your face.

On a serious note, A.J., you are truly an asset to our Company. We salute you and your continued hard work, dedication, and nonstop commitment to Southwest—and we are fortunate to have you as part of our Family.—Brandi DeWaters
