Southwest Airlines Community

Sharing our Spirit

slogan

Southwest Airlines Employees are known for having Servant's Hearts and for giving back to our communities.  In addition to the countless volunteer activities that our Employees organize on an individual basis in their local communities, we also support several Companywide Share the Spirit events each year.  For example, BWI Dr. Seuss Group.JPGfor the national Read Across America initiative last March, we partnered with the Pi Beta Phi sorority to hand out Dr. Seuss books to children in 25 of our airports.  In June, during our 35th Anniversary celebration, we "Spread the LUV" with America's Second Harvest Food Banks nationwide and collected mountains Peanut Butter.jpgof peanut butter. In addition, we hold our famous LUV Classic golf tournaments in Dallas and Phoenix every year to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House in various cities. Our latest Company-sponsored Share the Spirit event took place during Super Bowl weekend.  As the "Official Airline of the Super Bowl" we were able to have some fun-filled competition of our own.  The always-entertaining "Pro Tow" for charity is an event in which professional football players compete with local muscle men in a unique form of tug-of-war.  Superbowl Pro-Tow 056.jpgTwo teams compete to prove who can pull a 100,000 pound airplane 50 yards in the shortest amount of time.  This year in Miami, twelve employees from the Broward County Sheriff's Office competed against twelve members of the NFL Pro Tow team, and the event took place at the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Super Bowl2 005.jpgThe NFL players won the contest (by seven seconds), and they received a $2,500 check and 20 Southwest Airlines tickets for their designated charity, the Player Assistance Trust Fund.  Don't feel too sorry for the Broward County Sheriff's Office detention, law enforcement and fire rescue officials, though, because even their "losing" team received 20 Southwest Airlines tickets for their charity, the Sheriff's Foundation. Super Bowl2 010.jpg That just goes to show that everyone wins when Southwest Airlines Employees Share the Spirit!

So Shelley, Would you say that the NFL players tackled the problem while the deputies cuffed the opposition? A tip of the Cat's Hat, to all the Employees who helped organize these events. I have participated in several of the Share the Spirit events, like painting over graffiti last summer in the neighborhoods around our Headquarters Building, and it is gratifying to be able to give back to the community. I was there for the Spread the LUV rally, but somehow I completely missed the Dr. Seuss events! And I guess I thought the Texas-OU Plane Pull was the only one for the year. It really is amazing how many events Southwest People sponsor and participate in each year. I'm gonna need more video tape 🙂

Phil and Ding Boy, That Kim Seale is quite the tagging artist, but for the sake of the community, his work was covered in gray paint--especially the candy corn comments. Blog Boy

Phil, not quite yet but we are getting there. The song birds are back, We got some snow today, but 40 degrees is on its way in a few days. Ops has been busy rerouting planes at dtw according to flightaware and southwest.com. Looks like they do a great job as there are not a lot of "trapped" planes when the weather turns. Brrrrr!
