So, you want to be a flight attendant!

Twenty three years ago I announced to my friends and family that I wanted to become a Flight Attendant for Southwest Airlines. This announcement was met with raised eyebrows, as I was considered by some as not being suited for this profession. "Why not?" you say. "You are not going to wear those shorts, are you?" my best friend asked. "What about your degree in speech therapy?" my father questioned. "You are going to abandon me?" my 17-year-old son complained. My only support came from my husband who said, "I always wanted to sleep with a Flight Attendant, but I never thought it would be you!" For Christmas that year, all the gifts had been opened that were under the tree. Ready to disband, my brother said, "Wait - there's one more gift!" He leaves the room for a minute and comes back with a size 2 Southwest Airlines uniform; a pair of plastic Flight Attendant wings, and a roundtrip ticket to Austin. "Put these on and work a round trip to Austin and back. I bet you change your mind!" Every night, I lay in bed thinking about interview questions I might be asked and acceptable answers. I had answers to questions I have yet to be asked! I received my letter asking me to come for a Group Interview. Now came the hard part: What am I going to wear? I decided on a red wool suit that was similar to the Flight Attendant uniform at the time. I bought new camel colored pumps (closed toe and heel) and matching purse. Looking the part, I reported to the Headquarters Building in Dallas. The chairs in the interview room were arranged in a horseshoe shape. I headed for the middle seat. The applicant sitting beside me asked if I would put her keys in my new purse since she didn't bring one. She was to become one of my best friends to this day. We were asked to stand up, spell our names, tell something about ourselves and why we wanted to fly for SWA. When I stood up, I went to the front of the room and just knew I was going to slip and fall on my face. I should have worn those new shoes previously so the soles weren't slick! I told them that, when I reached my midlife crisis, I didn't know whether to go to medical school (the residency for brain surgery was so long) or become a fry cook at Denny's (even though I had lost my taste for that sort of thing). Then I realized I would be a perfect fit for the job of Flight Attendant because I had waited on people hand and foot; I could talk to a wrong number for fifteen minutes; and I had certainly worked for peanuts. I hoped Southwest Airlines would agree!" Well, they did agree and I've been grateful ever since.

Hello, I'm interested in how I actually contact a Flight Attendant School. I understand that there is one in Dallas, Texas . . .is that true? Could you tell me how to contact that school> Is it also true that if you become sick during the training, you must leave the program and return to the next session? In other words, you can't miss even one day of training? Is SW hiring flight attendants at this time? Thank you for your help . . .

Southwest, along with all other major carriers, is definitely not hiring right now. With the mess that is the travel industry right now along with the fuel costs, it will probably be quite awhile before there will be airline jobs again. I am just glad that Southwest has not had to suffer through big layoffs and (thus far) is not yet having to charge for baggage.

Steph, actually we are still growing and hiring. FA positions might not be listed only because we may have a lot of applicants in the hiring pool. Brian

If you are interested in being hired, register on SWA 's job site with your resume and profile. You can request email alerts for jobs. I registered a month or so ago and got an email yesterday for a one on one interview in July. I am currently an FA with another airline, but have only been there two years, so I don't think that is necessarily an advantage. Also, being a "people person" is not really your best personality trait. They want people who are gracious, calm and poised and have a good sense of humor and are flexible. You have to be able to project a "command presence" so that passengers feel confident that you know what you are doing but still feel that they are getting good service. This was a midlife career change for me after 25 years in the corporate world. I can testify to the fact that maturity is an asset not a drawback and I encourage anyone to apply who has varied employment experience. I feel that the passengers feel more comfortable with a mature flight attendant rather than a younger person who might lack in self confidence or poise. Those of us already doing the job can tell you how much fun it is BUT it is not glamorous and you won't make much money. The travel benefits are fabulous though. So bottom line - register on the careers website . Don't wait to see job openings - they may not show up as Brian said because they already have a lot of applicants in the hiring pool. Good luck and thanks to everyone for the good advice. For the mom with the young child - think about how you would handle child care when you have to go on a four day trip with two hours notice! Could you manage that? If not you may have to wait until you have child care in place.

Could someone please tell me the requirements needed for a Southwest FA? Thanks

I was in junior high school (7th grade) in the early 70's. That was when I dreamed of being a flight attendant. For years being 5' 2 1/2" was too short. I never lived my dream. Now, my kids are raised, and I have grand children. I'm still 5' 21/2" tall, 104 pounds, in good shape and still dream of being a flight attendant. If Ichoose to train for this, only with Southwest Airlines. I love flying and I absolutely love Southwest Airlines. Does anyone know where I can go to ask about flight attendant school for Southwest Airlines only.

I start flight attendant school a week from tomorrow and to put it bluntly... im terrified. I'm so nervous and it's been hard for me to study. In the trining booklet they sent out last month it says to memorize EVERYTHING in it and there are so many PAs to remember, I don't know if I am going to be able to cram it all in my head in time. Do you really have to know all the words by heart of the PAs by the second day of class? I would really like some advice and information from anyone who knows anoything about this. Southwest is who I am training with.. and It's in Houston Jenie. I had to go through two interviews in Oakland, CA. and waited close to a year to hear back from them. I'm very excited, but nervous as well. Please if anyone has anything to say that would help, please feel free. Also, I am confused about pay. I have heard good and bad things. Does anyone know abt how much a flight attendant really makes? Thank you so much everyone 🙂

Hi everyone, I'm so exited I received a call yesterday for a one one interview in Alameda, CA on 7/31/08. From what I'm seeing on this blog is that it takes nearly a year to be actually hired & placed in a training class. Is that what I should expect if I am chosen? I'm not nervious about the interview unless they ask me to sing. What is the protocal? Any insight as to the process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Wendy

I went to a one-on-one interview on July 30 and yesterday received a rejection letter dated July 31. I thought interview went great, it lasted over an hour, more than the other three ladies which lasted only 15-20 minutes. Anyone else have this kind of experience? I'm baffled.
Anonymous2145

Where did you interview at? Was it a one on one or more like a panel interview with more then one person asking questions? Do you have previous FA experience? I'm just curious. I had my interview this week and am now waiting.

At 56 with a medical office background I am giving a flight attendant career considerable thought. Exactly how intense is the training and testing for Southwest.? I"m just not sure at my age if I am ready to take on fast paced training and testing and I sure wouldn't even apply if I didn't think I could pass training. Also I live in Indiana about 1 hr.15.min from Midway airport which is one of Southwest Airlines bases. Do you think that is an unreasonable distance and are you given enough notice when on reserve to be able to commute? I just don't think I could relocate but I would definitely commute if there is enough time given. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm over 40 and I just got accepted to the Flight Attendant Training class. I'm really excited but at the same time the unexpected is difficult. I have no clue what I'm about to walk into but what I do know is I've worked since I was 14yoa and at this point I'm finally doing something I wanted to do in my 20ties but could afford to. I'm married no children. The struggle I face is my current job making offers for me to stay and this opportunity staring me in the face. So I say to you all weigh all of your options and make the best decision based on where you are and where you're suppose to be heading. Blessings, New Meat..LOL

Well I am going to my group information/interview tomorrow here in MCO. I commuted on Southwest almost every day to my other airline base, so I feel like I have already worked for them. Every single flight attendant I have come into contact with at WN has been friendly, professional, and really cares about the pax and their job. I hope to be joining the WN family soon! LUV you all! I also was invited to FA training after my interview. I am so excited however I don't think that I will be training until the beginning of 2009, which is okay with me since I will be moving prior to that. I am so excited though! I am flying to California on Friday and I'm excited just to be on a SWA flight! (: Mike, how did your group interview go? And New Meat, when did you interview? Do you know when your training will be? Can't wait to start flyin'! JL

Mike, Good luck and keep me posted. I would love to know how it goes for you. ( : Kelly, all I can say is go on Southwest career site and sign up for the job alert emails. When I applied online the job was only posted for a couple of hours so you just need to be watching closely. Good luck!

Hi there Carole, Thanks for sharing your wonderful story, like everybody i really enjoyed it too. I'm 23 and I've always wanted to become a flight attendant; I don't have a particular airline in mind that I would want to work for...as long as I get to start in with this career, that would just mean everything. Few years ago I was applying for FA jobs almost everywhere and I've managed to make it upto most of the interviews and, i believe I've enough customer service experiences too. Somehow, I never made it to the training yet as I usually don't hear from them after the interview or they just reject me....I always ask myself where did I go wrong but never got my answers. I even took help from an online training class but still didn't seem to help. Now, its been about 2 years, and I've stopped applying for FA positions. I've been working as a CNA ( Certified Nursing Assistant) and trying to get into a nursing school. But I still have so much desire to be a flight Attendant, and it makes me so sad, and helpless when i think of it. Do you have any suggestions for me ,please? Regards, Olive.

Carole, Reading your story brought tears to my eyes. Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to be a flight attendant. I wanted to meet new people, learn new thing, see new places; But, its not as easy as it seem. I went to College for a few years but I couldn't decide what I wanted to do. Because what I really wanted to do (F/A) was not offer there. I applied for a different airlines but, no one was hiring at the time. I decided I work at Airport. Fortunate enough, I landed a position inside Brooks Brothers. Every time I see a group or Flight attendant that come through I wish I was boarding the plane with them. I keep thinking to myself 'Is this the closest I'll ever get?' I don't want to give up. Does anyone have any suggestion what I should do? or how to get started?

I very much enjoyed your blog! I am 21, fresh out of community college with my AA and starting up at a University for my BA, but I am very interested in becoming a flight attendant. I have worked in food/customer service since I was 15 and I love it! Some of the aspects of serving people hand and foot do not appeal to most, but I have a sense of accomplishment when I make somebody's day. My first time flying with my father and sisters, it was the flight attendant who was very reasuring to my frightened sister, and I realized right then and there that this is what I wanted to do. My only problem- I have NO idea what to do first, who to call or talk to about getting hired on at an airline. Websites are not very helpful considering they are not updated daily. Any suggestions??? Thank you so much!

hello, i'm doing research online into how to become a F/A, which school is the best, there are a wide range of tuitions, som i'm not sure what the best option is. I've heard, if hired, each airline trains you specifically, so one school told me they do a limited amount of training, bringing in recruiters, and teach you how to do your resume and interview. I would love to work for SWA, but from reading info, it sounds like it is difficult to be choosy re which airline you'd like to work. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks so much.

My name is Derrick Chan and I am an Administrative Assistant for the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute at the University of California at San Francisco. I was wondering whether you had any contacts to flight attendant mailing lists or union representatives to try to reach out to flight attendants to participate in our study posted below. I have been unable to find any contacts for Southwest Airlines in particular. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon. EPHI: Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute Study The University of California, San Francisco in a study involving all flight attendants over the age of 40 with a minimum of 5 years flight experience. We are looking at the effects of second hand smoke and its correlation with lung and heart disease and hoping you would all be willing to participate. Participants should expect to have a Pulmonary Function test (PFT) and an examination by one of our physicians. Patients will be paid $100.00 approximately 6-8 weeks on completion of their appointment. In addition, volunteers will receive a parking voucher and lunch vouchers for use at the UCSF Cafeteria. Whether or not they participate in the clinical study, we would like flight attendants to complete our online questionnaire found at http://www.imenet.net/UCSFQuest/ If you have any suggestions on how to reach other flight attendants, please contact us at FAMRI@ucsfmedctr.org. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, Some advice from our People Department... People should reapply online to be considered each time we post a position. We also suggest that people set up a job alert so that when we post a position, they will get an email alerting them that the job is available. And as always, http://www.southwest.com/careers/ is your best bet! Good luck!

Hi Carole, My fiance' has had a dream for many years of becoming a flight attendant, but has not had the opportunity. He doesn't think he can do it, but I do not think there is a better job that he could do. He has an MBA and has worked so hard to try to make decent money, but his heart's not in it. He wants an adventurous job like a flight attendant and I want him to have it. If you have the time, I really wish that you could talk with him and motivate him and maybe if you feel that he is suited well to become a flight attendant a letter of reccommedation or some tips for him or something to help him get where he wants to be. When I read your story about becoming a flight attendant, I knew that you would be someone to talk to. My email is missverity_1@hotmail.com. Feel free to email me or IM me and I want you to talk with him and meet him if you can. He is a very proud man and refuses help from me like flight attendant school and he has it stuck in his mind that he's too old even though he's only 28. He is 5 ft. 7 in., lean and muscular. He feels that his dreams were shattered when his parents got divorced when he was 16. I argued with him today about this exact same thing because I've been trying to help him. He needs a flight attendant to talk with him, get to know him, and tell him that he can do it.

So here I am 31yrs old, working 8-5 M-F as a float nurse In Austin Tx wishing I would have a least tried the "flight path".. If anyone knows with whom or where I could get the oppurtunity to do this please let me know.. Crystal Scoggins

Hi Everyone! Maybe someone can help me out. I am a teacher who is doing a career project with my students. Of course, I have to do the project myself in order to demonstrate what I am looking for to the students. I am having the students choose a career and find out what is involved in the career and how math is used. (Since this is a math class). I chose the career Flight Attendant because I always thought it would be such a great job. Are there any flight attendants that can answer a few questions for me? Please email me if you are a flight attendant that can help out my class and myself. JCDabkowski@gmail.com
