Southwest Airlines Interns Share the Spirit

Not applicable

For the LUV of the Lake

Equipped with trash bags, shovels and metal rakes, the Southwest Interns took on the summer heat to Share the Spirit with the Dallas community.

This week, the Southwest Airlines summer Interns participated in the first all-Intern community service project in the history of the program.

I was one of about 30 Southwest Interns who got their hands dirty to assist the local organization, For the Love of the Lake, in cleaning up White Rock Lake Park in Dallas. We split into two groups to either pick up litter surrounding the lake or pull weeds near the T.P. Hill children’s playground.

We were happy to express our LUV of the lake and to share in Southwest’s ongoing commitment to community service, as well as to the environment, through this project.

The volunteers at For the Love of the Lake (FTLOTL) are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the park, and FTLOTL has been helping keep White Rock Lake Park clean through several different projects since 1995.

At the beginning of the summer, this project was placed in the hands of Dawn Siemiet, the People Department Intern. Dawn was presented with the opportunity to broaden the Southwest Airlines NoLimits Internship Program to include a community service project. Therefore, this was also the first Intern service project to be fully coordinated by an Intern.

Dawn chose For the Love of the Lake because it was a local opportunity that could accommodate a large number of volunteers.

This community service project was a great way to showcase our Servant’s Hearts and come together as an internship class to make a little bit of a difference in our community.

After my NoLimits Internship semester ends next month, I will head back to Ohio with not only real-world job experience, but also with a warm spot in my heart for the family I’ve been welcomed into here at Southwest Airlines.

Not only should all the interns be proud of their accomplishment, but Southwest deserves praise for helping their community. Just think what it would be like if EVERY company allowed their employees to be paid while doing volunteer work. Great job!!
