During his presidency, George Washington made a visit to survey the Southern States and stayed one night in a lone tavern in a tiny community then known as Windy Hill, South Carolina. Windy Hill typically received very few visitors and they’d certainly never welcomed a visitor as prestigious as the President.
Today, that tiny community, now known as Myrtle Beach, has grown into the thriving chief city of South Carolina’s “Grand Strand,” a gorgeous beach-based metropolitan area with a population nearing half a million. Tourism in the area has grown a lot beyond the occasional wandering Commander-in-Chief as well: today Myrtle Beach welcomes well over 10 million visitors a year. It’s easy to see why; besides the 60 miles of stunning beaches, the Grand Strand is home to boardwalks, amusement parks, museums, world-class performance halls, golf courses, shopping complexes, a stunning string of beachfront resorts, and even a pirate-themed dinner theater!
