Southwest Debuts the 737-800: Warrior One!

Aviator C

Many of you have been following our updates as our new 737-800 moved through the construction process and through the first test flight on February 23. One of those steps was the “in-person” introduction today to members of the media, Southwest Employees, and guests at events hosted in Dallas.

The day kicked off with a media preview of the new aircraft, followed by an Employee celebration. At the media preview, Southwest Executives Mike Van de Ven and Brian Hirshman displayed the aircraft to reporters, showcasing the highlights of the -800’s features like the new Boeing Sky Interior, as well as discussing how the -800 will allow us to add overwater routes and more capacity to slot-restricted airports. Boeing Vice President and Program Manager for the 737 Program, Bev Wyse, closed out the media presentation with a recap of Southwest’s long association with the 737.

Sun Warrior

Then the aircraft taxied over to the Employee event, where it was dedicated and named  Warrior One in salute of the Southwest Employees’ Warrior Spirit. The 737-800 will take our airline to new places and allow us compete in highly competitive, but highly restricted markets like LaGuardia, so it’s only fitting that we name it Warrior One to reflect that “can do” attitude.

This is a beautiful aircraft, and I know our Customers will love it, but it also plays an important strategic role in our future. Warrior One and the other -800s carry 175 passengers, which is a whopping 28 percent increase over our current fleet configuration.  Besides improving our unit costs per flight, the -800 gives us opportunities for longer-haul flying and schedule flexibility by adding capacity in those high-demand, slot-controlled, or gate-restricted airports.

Sky Interior

The Boeing Sky Interior offers a quieter, more comfortable environment for Customers with taller ceilings and more overhead bin space, improved operational security features, and ambient LED reading and ceiling lighting. Besides being more effective, the new interior is energy efficient. Also, our great Flight Attendants can match the lighting to the mood onboard the aircraft—subdued at night or bright and festive for a Las Vegas flight.

After the formal part of the event, Employees were allowed to tour the aircraft and see firsthand the new Boeing Sky Interior with its improved sidewalls, larger overheads, and new ceiling with mood lighting.

Confetti

After some final certifications, Warrior One and our second 737-800 will be set to enter scheduled service on April 11. I hope you all have a chance to fly on a brand new Southwest -800 very soon!

I flown SWA for nearly 30 years. They are the BEST airline in the air. There is NO other airline that can match their service and friendliness. Can't wait to fly on there -800. Hope SWA will start flying to HNL out of SJC soon with the -800. BEST of luck to a great airline.

I have flown SWA since day one!! Since I was in college, my entire career and all my vacations. I am so looking forward to the day when we can take you all over the world, when I retire you and I fly to see the world and be right here to see the grand babies. Thank you Southwest. If I could, I would be on of the first to fly on the new one. Sincerely, j. Fish

Southwest is the only airline I fly, simply the best as far as customer service, excellant airline!

We fly quite a bit and fly Southwest whenever possible. Not crazy about the new point system. We have to do last minute flights and flight changes sometimes and I feel like that it's horribly unfair to penalize people for last minute emergencies by charging quadruple the norm. The outdated "awards passes" did not do that, but now with the new points system, you are penalized for last minute emergency flights whether you are using points or paying dollars. SAD!

Nice plane. I'm kinda hoping that SW comes to Hawaii with the use of the "over water" phrase that they used. I was happy with the service on the one time I did fly with them. Maybe using the 717's from air trans for some inter island service can help to get rid of that sucky Go! Molulele airlines and bring down some of the inter island fares. Although my heart is with Hawaiian Air it would be nice to have SW flying in the Hawaiian skies

My daughter is a student @ The University of Alabama. I never worry that she will be bumped or treated unfairly by Southwest. She has only had the best of travel experiences even with terrible weather, flight diversions, and cancelations. Everyone was always helpful and cheerful to her and made her feel that she counted. Thank you for all you do and congratulations on the beautiful new aircraft.

I drive an extra 60 miles to the nearest airport that flies Southwest Airlines because they are they best! Great safety record, better prices, they even let you bring your luggage FREE of charge (imagine that novel idea-take luggage with you when you travel) and their sense of humor make flying Southwest a joy. Can't wait til they come to Rochester, NY!

Southwest really went downhill when the changed the rapid rewards program. I;'m sorry to say that now my loyalty toward Southwest has weakened. also their fares now have gotten more expensive. they are shooting themselves in the foot.

I love Southwest but "Warrior One" really? I am a soldier in the Army and we are considered warriors. I just think ya'll could have picked a better name for the plane which is very beautiful. The 737 is a very good aircraft which will keep flying for a very long time.

Southwest is becoming more like the other airlines. The rewards program is getting worse for customers. The prices are getting to be to much. The aqusition of air tran has been very slow. They are still have change fees &charge for a seat, and have bag fees. If SW has taken over Air Tran why haven't they stopped these charges? Like I said they are getting more like the other air lines. What happen to the low fares? $600.00 r/t from fl. to las vegas.

I have had to use a wheel chair a lot in the last three years. SWA has been so good to me about this. No other airline has been so understanding and helpful.

Southwests dreadful way of dumping Sarasota/Bradenton from their line up after acquiring AirTran is pitiful. A shinny new plane will not turn me into their customer any time soon.

does this mean swa will now start service to ogg or hnl

If SWA is not for everybody fine, they are my airline. I would love to see them crack into the Alaska market. I look forward to the day that I get to fly their newest bird.

Has anyone read the Newsweek article regarding the structural flaws of the 737 that STILL have not been fixed?

Well, good news, but I really really hope this 737-800 has more than the usual two restrooms......all Southwest planes currently in use have only TWO restrooms, one in front, and one in rear. So if you are planning to use this on long-haul flights, such as LAX-LGA, I REALLY hope you stick with the industry standard of two restrooms in back, plus one restroom in front like virtually all 737's.

I wish Southwest would have flights to Melborne, Fl from Manchester. N.H. Alot of people from the northeast have places or vacation on the east coast in Fl. Would make it alot easier and cheaper for people going to central, Fl's east coast. We fly Southwest all the time, great airline!!!

Jason must be a terminated Southwest employee. I flew for over 35 years on business and Southwest was and still is the best airline out there.

I believe most of us are appreciative of having an airline like 'Southwest' and most of us are also smart enough to know how 'brain dead' all the 'Mean Mouths' are. Life must terribly boring if all they have to do with their time is make stupid remarks. Thankyou Southwest, you are the greatest!

Jason, In case you pay taxes, then I'd like you to know that I fly Southwest whenever my business travel takes me even close to one of their hubs. I'll drive from Nashville to Knoxville if I have to. I'd like you to know that Southwest has SAVED YOU probably $30,000 over the last ten years, just on my travel alone. If you count all the ticket change fees I did not have to pay on United, American, Delta and Continental, then the number would be EVEN higher. As an engineer, I find it compelling that until Warrior One showed up, any SWA 737 could stand in for any other plane, ensuring me a seat even if they have to switch planes due to weather or mechanical problems. Such a simple solution. I LUV to fly SWA! Quinn

I LUV SWA I have been blessed to fly many times for both work and pleasure. When given the chance I ALWAYS select SWA. Flying into smaller airfields like Love or Isslip is not a hassle at all. I hate having to fly brand X to locations out of the US or West to Hawaii. I hope someday to be the first to fly SWA to Hawaii or even London. Remember London is Southwest of Paris, France. Honolulu is Southwest of San Francisco so come on, join me in celebrating SWA LUV attitude and wish them and their GREAT crews a healthy, happy, safe and successful future as we look forward to boarding a 737-800 in our future.

We love Southwest and use them all the time!!! Any airline that doesn't nickel and dime me, is my kind of business. We haven't had any problems with them, except it took alittle longer one time to get our luggage.

SWA is awesome. They were smart enough to secure a long term fuel contract that kept their operations cost to a minimum, which made them cash liquid to afford bags fly free, new and improved planes, low fares, and more. Gotta give some love to the flight attendants to...."the best in the business"....... All that's missing is Internet on SW flights..... like sister company Air Tran. Keep up the good work SWA! I flew SWA for years for business. Then another carrier undercut them. Lasted three months and we were back to SWA. I do not hate the other carrier, SWA just does a better job for us.

When are you going to make flights to and from Hawaii?? I'm waiting impatiently!

I can't wait for those nice -800's to go to Honolulu. Nothing but LUV for the awesome service and great flexibility, not to mention no change fees and fully re-useable funds. Oh yeah, and those free bags. Even if the fare is the same, no bag fees really makes it so much better. I do miss the old-old Rapid Rewards program, but as long as points do not expire we are good.

Congratulations Southwest You are an amazing company and have always had the best service and the best planes. I cant wait to fly on an 800. I wont fly any other airline. Have a great year!

My wife Judy and I fly Southwest as often as we can. I get my email from them every Tuesday on up coming specials on flights. We have booked vacations months ahead and saved some cash by flying for so little money. We love Southwest. A few years ago we flew from Sacramento nostop to San Diego in July for $39.00 Each way. Now that was a big savings

I just got off of a Southwest flight about an hour ago, I'm very happy with Southwest, keep up the good work. It's nice to see a company excel. It's the day before Easter, lots of long lines that were handled quickly.

I heard "longer over water flights." Could we be seeing flights from the West Coast to Hawaii maybe? PLEASE? Nice looking plane. You also said "more seats." Please tell me you have not shoved the seats closer together (like UAL did) to accomplish this, but rather that the plane is longer. South West is one of the few airlines that still respects people's space, by given decent leg and seat room. I am hoping that has not changed. Congrats on a new plane.

I Fly (ONLY) SW, this is great! Does it even need a Pilot?? Great Company, last flew a few weeks ago and had the best Piots and attendants Flt #787 from Den to Okc, short Black lady was Senior Attendant and was very Professional and her crew was very expedichios and eevn with Turbulance! \

Friendly people, all the way around. Good fares, great routes and no luggage fee. That is why I fly SWA and why I will continue to fly SWA. But how about bringing the -800 to San Diego?

Explorer C
All the comments in the video are great from a Company perspective. But was does this airplane mean from a customer perspective???? It would appear that is takes longer to board and deplane, probably doesn't make flying anymore comfortable. Tell me why I should be pleased about the -800.

...flown commercially stateside and overseas for almost 50 years...Southwest is the best value around...hands down...forget the silly points that don't seem to make the people that want something for nothing happy...continue to offer your top notch all-around service...and those wonderful service and baggage freebies that get noticed by customers...the wanna get away fares make travel affordible for most!!! Thank you! Kay

The best thing about SWA is their Flight Attendants. Once, on a longish flight from Nashville to Seattle, they grouped at the front of the cabin and performed a comedy act that had everyone in stitches! SWA is always my first choice.
