Last month, Southwest Airlines celebrated National Volunteer month and encouraged Employees to put their Heart in action through volunteerism. Across the system, our Employees supported our communities in the spirit of giving back!

Our Employees went above and beyond to give of their time, talent and treasure during the month of April to make a difference in their communities. Whether online, at the office, or at the local food bank, doing good comes in many different forms and we recognize and celebrate them all! Take a look at just a few of the ways our Employees honored National Volunteer Month and let us know how you supported your communities!

Supporting the Planet

Communiity Volunteer Recap 5.JPGAt Southwest, we’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint in service of a better future for our Customers, Cohearts, and communities. On Earth Day, Southwest donated $50K to the National Forrest Foundation (NFF), whose mission is to support a greener planet. Employees were invited to plant a tree on their own and/or donate $1 to purchase a tree. The NFF will use the donations received from our Employees and Customers to plant an additional 1,500 trees in our National Forests.

In Fresno, nearly 50 Southwest Family members joined Beautify Fresno to plant 150 trees to commemorate our inaugural weekend. And our Cohearts from the Honolulu (HNL) and Maui (OGG) stations honored the earth by hosting a beach cleanup.

Empowering our Communities

Our Heart is to take care of People and our Las Vegas (LAS) and Lihue (LIH) Employees did just that! In Stations including LAS, Employees volunteered their time to The Dream Foundation, by creating handmade cards offering inspiration and comfort to those facing the insurmountable challenge of limited time. The Dream Foundation serves terminally ill adults and their families by providing end-of-life Dreams. Check out these handmade cards that undoubtedly made someone’s day a little brighter!

We welcomed the Santa Barbara community into the Southwest network by volunteering during the inaugural weekend. Employees supported The Dream Foundation and its Flower Empower program, making more than 8,000 bouquets!

In LIH, Employees celebrated Volunteer Week in partnership with Kanu Hawaii by prepping meal kits for the community through Nourish Kauai. Nourish Kauai is an organization that supports community members in need by providing nourishing food that is locally sourced.

Our Employees choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some, it offers the chance to give back to the community or make a difference in the communities in which they live and work. For others, it provides an opportunity to steward the planet’s resources responsibly. Thank you to all who have spent time volunteering! Let’s keep the momentum going:

  • Devote your personal passions to champion causes and make an impact.
  • Put your Heart in action to serve people and organizations to make a difference.
  • Inspire those around you and strengthening your communities by organizing and promoting volunteer projects with your friends and family.

Don’t forget, we want everyone to show their Heart and commit to small Acts of Kindness each and every day. Take our Acts of Kindness pledge to help us make the world a better place—one Act of Kindness at a time.
