Spring Has Sprung

springflowers.jpg Each fall, I spend countless hours in my flowerbeds planting bulbs. During the dead and lifeless winter months, I forget about my efforts in the fall. As the weather turns warm, I am rewarded with beautiful buttercups, tulips, and more. (The buttercup picture is from my flowerbeds this year.) Our trees, plants, and flowers create such beautiful artwork this time of year. I have always wanted to travel to Washington, DC, for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. From what I hear, it is well worth the trip. On April 14, Southwest Airlines presents the Parade of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. If you want to see the festival this year, it runs from March 31 through April 15. What other botanical events or festivals would you suggest as a must see?

Hollee, What a pretty picture! I'll bet your flowerbeds are the talk of the neighborhood. Although it is not worth organizing a botanical festival or major journey to our house each spring, our kids have always looked forward to the appearance of their mother's fall planting efforts as well. Each spring, we are rewarded with the sight of many bulbs coming up in our flowerbeds, too, and my wife takes extra care to mix and mingle the varieties to come up in a non-boring pattern. The assortment of 60 watt bulbs inbetween 75 watters, neatly surrounded by 40 watt refrigerator bulbs and a few 50-150-250 three-way bulbs, really lights up our neighborhood! Kim 🙂

Muskogee, OK (a medium-sized town about 45 miles SE of home) has an Azalea Festival at Honor Heights Park. I've not been for a long time, though.

In Phoenix, we don't have spring, we just go straight to 100 degree weather. Jedi Blog Master

I'm not a huge flower buff, but I hear Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC, Canada is decent. We saw fireworks once there!

Paco, You turn on the furnace when it is 70 out ;-) I wear shorts then and phoenixians are in winter coats. Overinflation/overloading can lead to tire failure Ding! boy Joe

Joe, What are you talking about? 70 degrees is a cold snap! You obviously didn't see the snow we got in January by the airport either! Of course it was anything but flurries, but still we got it! Oh, and for the record, I wear shorts in 50 degree weather using Jedi mind tricks on my cold legs. Jedi Blog Master

Luv SWA use it fairly often. Have one major complaint and observation. Why cant I take my LITTLE (9 lbs) very quiet dog on you planes. In your (Jan Spirit I believe) you had an ad showing a CAT having a Birthday party suggesting we use SWA to fly to friends Bdays. Then the next issue told about the great places SWA flys to that have great DOG high end boarding places (I remember a dog bisket with caviar on it). So please stop teasing us with these PET stories UNLESS you will let me take my LITTLE dog in her case on your flights???? Still like you tho..... Oh well

Paco, I have several family members scattered throughout Arizona. My Uncle lives not far from you in Glendale, my parents and an aunt live in Prescott, and another aunt and uncle live in Pinetop. I guess the latter two can't give up on the snow as they all have come from MI. Only one aunt has spent more of her life in AZ than MI. I did find it quite amusing visiting in Feb years ago when it was 70 and I had the shorts on and the locals had the winter jackets on. I don't miss the visits in August when it is over 100 there! It is as bad as 80 and high humidity here. Only you can prevent forest fires Ding! boy Joe

Buchart Gardens are amazing, Azalea festival in Oklahoma is also lovely. Other than that, Dallas Blooms and my front yard are the best! My roses are just starting to bloom!

If you come to the Cherry Blossom Festival, leave your car at a Metro station, where parking is free on Saturdays and Sundays; you'll find traffic jammed in downtown DC. Take good walking shoes with you and get off at either the Blue/Orange line Smithsonian stop on the Mall with the Tidal Basin west of you (toward and left of the Washington Monument), or the Arlington Cemetery stop on the Blue line, then cross Memorial Bridge over the Potomac toward the Tidal Basin on your right.

Hollee, I'm suprised that Irish-Oregonian Erin hasn't weighed in on this. One of the oldest botanical celebrations is the Rose Festival every June in Portland. One of the events is the judging of the rose varieties which is held in the Rose Test garden of Washington Park. Blog Boy

Hmmmm, two days since the Duck upset and still no word from Erin. I hope she's okay and has not sunk down into some downward spiral of depression. Hang in there, Erin, y'all did great to get as far as you did and you've got nothing to be ashamed of! Brian, let's send her a beautiful bouquet of candy corn to cheer her up! Kim, the part-time quacker 🙂

Kim Go ahead and send me a boquet of candy corn while you're at it. I'm still pretty depressed about my trojans getting knocked out of the tournament by the tar heels. Oh well, at least we beat those pesky long horns. I can't wait until next season. OJ Mayo is going to be the best player in the country... -Trojan Blog Boy (my new blog nickname) 😎

How about those bluebonnets ? My blooms are huge and everywhere just from a packet of seeds 7 years ago. Plant those Texas babies and watch them spread.
