Turning Phone Calls into Smiles

Happy Kidd’s Kids Day! For the last nine years, this special day has been one of my favorite days of the year. Kidd’s Kids is an organization that yearly provides children (ages 5 to 12) who have chronic or terminal illness or are physically challenged due to a birth defect or accident with an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. Southwest has partnered with Kidd’s Kids to provide travel for the Kidd’s Kids trip to Orlando for the last ten years, and I’ve been privileged to volunteer for the telethon on Kidd’s Kids Day for nine of those years.

One of the things I love most about working for Southwest Airlines is feeling empowered to make a difference. During the telethon on Kidd’s Kids Day, more than 60 Southwest Employees volunteer several hours of their morning to answer phone calls and accept donations that will help fund the Kidd’s Kids Walt Disney World trip. I love knowing that each time the phone rings, it means another smile on the face of a child who has dealt with so much at such a young age. These pledges will provide the funding for 52 families to go to Disney World in November. Last year, more than $50,000 was raised through the phone bank, and I can’t wait to see how much will be donated today.

Every year, I look forward to volunteering for the telethon. It’s amazing to know that by spending a few hours of my day answering calls, I’m a part of something so much bigger than myself. The atmosphere during the telethon has always been exhilarating and lively, and I know today will be no different.

If you would like to donate, you can call me or one of the other telethon volunteers until 12:00 p.m. today at 888-SWA-KIDZ or visit kiddskids.com to donate anytime.
