What's the Vector, Victor?

I was trying to think of a quick funny post for the weekend, when several of us started spouting dialogue from the movie Airplane.  Hand's down, that's the favorite airplane movie in this office, although personally, The High and the Mighty, is tops in my book.  What's your favorite movie about airlines and/or airplanes and why? And, remember, I told you not to call me Shirley!

Dr. Rumack: "You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital." Elaine: "A hospital? What is it?" Dr. Rumack: "It's a big building with patients but that's not important right now."

One of the funniest airliner/ATC movies was Pushing Tin.

Is it bad of me to say the Airport series (75,77,etc..) was my favorite? I bought the box dvd set of all 4 movies. And I did not buy it for the "disaster aspect of the movie. I bought it because, thinking back as an example to Airport 75, the movie illustrates that even if an airplane/airliner experiences some type of "situation" in the air, that bird is still going to fly! And it is Safe! I was rooting for the 747 to get on the ground in SLC in that movie Personally I say this everyday, I feel safest in the air - for example even last nite (ironically to my paragraph above) when I flew WN from SLC to LAX and their were storms in the area. I had no fear of getting on the plane ! Everyone have a great weekend!

Brian, I have to agree with the majority of the staff there; "Airplane" was/is a classic in the annals of humor in general and specifically airline and aircraft comedy. Just as Leslie Nielsen has demonstrated an uncanny ability to keep a straight face while delivering comedic lines, I likewise think that in "Airplane", Peter Graves deserved a great deal more credit than he got. Saying hilariously funny lines without cracking up yourself is a true gift. If you think that just any trained actor or comedian can do it, just watch reruns or outtakes from the old "Carol Burnett Show" and observe how real pros like Harvey Korman and Tim Conway fought to keep their composure in front of each other! Kim P. S. So, Brian, do you like gladiator movies? ha ha.... 🙂

One of my favorites is the classic, "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0059797/). Definitely worth renting if you haven't seen it!

I probably enjoyed "Memphis Belle" more than any other...Enjoyed the "Airplane" movies, but have always been a wwii buff and to go what those young men went thru and to see them return on that final flight...Was bittersweet though if you watch the credits at the end and see how many airmen lost their lives in the war over Europe.....Sorry if you were looking for just funny movies...lol.....

Catch me if you can is a good airlines movie for me, although the theme is not related directly to an airlines. It shows how hi-class flying was in the past, unlike a familiar feeling like we're sitting in a crowed flying bus nowadays.

I was hoping you might be able to give me an "Over, Under" -- that you're hearing me loud and clear -- and have some advice for me! ;) I work for a major oil company and are putting in place a new team to run one of our new facilities. We are working to building a team that centers around stellar customer service. Does SWA ever have employees that deliver talks about its esteemed customer service?! ....everything's comin' up roses... Tricia

Love Airplane. But the best has to be Monty Python's Holy Grail has to be my number one. So many good quotes: Go away you knights or I shall taunt you a second time. (sound file) http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_sounds/hg/taunt.wav It's only a flesh wound! I fart in your general direction Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries. Ekki ekki ekki ekki pikang zoom-boing (sound file) http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_sounds/hg/icky.wav One, two, five!" "Three, sir." "Three!" What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? What do you mean? An African or a European swallow? You tiny-brained wipers of other people's bottoms! But I love them all. Life of Brian, Meaning of Life, the Monty Python shows (Cheese Shop).

Okay Jill, I consulted with the Knights that go Nicht, and they told me since you mentioned the airspeed of an unladen nswallow, this qualifies as an on-topic post. I assure you that the Life of Brian is not autobiographical, but I do look on the bright side of life. Brian (By the way, check out the "Link LUV" list on the side of the page. We have a link to Palin's Travels.)

Brian - one of my favorites is also "The High and the Mighty." My favorite part? When John Wayne whistles in the cockpit. I've often wondered if he did his own whistling? That was some great whistling.

That is so weird, Donna. When I worked in Portland for Delta, our Operations office was underneath the concourse which was built over the old concourse from the fifties. It was a long empty hallway reminiscent of the era of The High and the Mighty, and I would whistle the theme song just to hear it echo through the halls. Brian

Brian, On a slightly related note (isn't it fun how you can create tangents from just about any topic?), back in the mid-70s, when a group of us guys at UT-Austin used to walk from our dorm across the street to the campus cafeteria where we felt like prisoners while eating our gruel, hard cold rolls and lukewarm water (well, okay, not really, but it seemed like it at times), we'd march single-file and whistle the theme from "The Bridge on the River Kwai"! As the Ramp Agent marshals in a plane with orange reflector sticks, another agent approaches him and asks: "Hey Larry, where's the fork lift?" The marshaling agent replies: "It's over there with the baggage loader," while demonstrating by pointing the orange reflectors to the opposite direction. Moments later the plane crashes into the terminal window. (From Airplane!)
