Why I Only Pursued Southwest

Growing up, I was once told that the closer the gap between whom you are alone and who you are around others determines how genuine you are. Immediately, I adopted this as my mantra and eventually it became key for anything I would get involved in. In college, when I was recruiting, I tried my best to keep myself grounded on this philosophy. For those of us who go through the cut-throat recruiting game, we all know how easy it is to be someone different in order to appeal to a certain company.

When I first came across opportunities at Southwest Airlines, I knew that I wanted to be a part of their close-knit fabric because it seemed to fit well with who I was, therefore, I dropped other prospects and pursued only Southwest. I still remember that when I finally was offered an interview for a college internship, I was taken aback because my interview was comfortable enough to laugh, express myself, and be authentic. Upon graduation and completion of my internship, I was fortunate to have an opportunity to apply as an Associate Business Analyst.

In this role, I have been able to take my passion for writing and spoken word and apply it toward analysis, presentations, and creative ideas. Since starting nine months ago, I’ve been able to work on the Southwest.com mobile app and make firsthand contributions. One of my favorite moments was seeing an enhancement feature that I worked on from inception to production. Sometimes I’ll hear feedback from our Customers during my leisure travels, and it’s wonderful knowing that I had a direct impact in their mobile travel experience. As Associate Business Analysts,  we all get to contribute to the larger cause, connecting people to what’s important in their lives while continuing to connect ourselves to the same.

I would encourage people to pursue opportunities that they resonate with, that make them more of who they already are, and that are genuine. For me, that has been the Associate Business Analyst role at Southwest.
