Your Favorite Southwest Airport

Aviator C
This idea originated in a comment from Francis ("The USS Blog Boy") on David Evan's post, "Baggage Claim," so by popular demand, let's hear about your favorite airport served by Southwest.  We fly to 63, soon to be 64 (with the addition of San Francisco) airports, so tell us why your choice is your favorite.  Is it because of the facility, location, history, architecture, ease of use, flight schedule, our Employees, a combination of two or more of these criteria, or one that isn't listed?  No prizes will be awarded (no, not even candy corn), but go ahead...have fun!

Tucson!!!, yah I know what your thinking, either where is that? or, the runways need some work done on them. I love Tucson because the're always expanding the airport, there is some great artwork only found in Tucson @ the check in areas, Every time I go back to Tucson there is always at least one knew airline that has service to Tucson!!!

I want to second Greg's comment (2/24/07). I regularly travel between NH (MHT) and Northern VA, and would LUV to be able to fly into Dulles instead of having to drive the 60+ traffic-clogged miles from BWI. Fairfax and Louden counties in Northern VA are two of the fastest growing in the U.S., so it would seem that the population is there to support flights between IAD and New England and NY. SWA, please, please, please consider adding flights between Dulles and MHT and/or BDL!!

Cynthia, it depends on which way you take to BWI. If you're in Loudoun, why not just go up Rt. 15 through Point of Rocks and then head east on I-70 to Rt. 29 to Rt. 100? Or take the DC Metro to the BWI shuttle in Greenbelt? Or the MARC or Amtrak from Union Station? I don't want there to be duplication between BWI and IAD. Besides, the flights out of BWI have been developed over 14 years. Give. it. time. You don't want SWA to suffer the same fate as Eastwind or Independence at IAD, do you? I LUV BWI and am not a fan of IAD. IAD is closer as the crow flies to where I live, but just as far if not further driving-wise from BWI.

And with this, I dive head first into my very first ever "blog entry." After reading all these comments, please let me add: BWI, people! BWI BWI BWI BWI BWI BWI BWI BWI!!!!!! I lived in Baltimore for two years after college (moved there from California). While I'll agree that some of the other airports mentioned in these posts are nice, there really is NO place like BWI. The facility (just opened last year) is marvelous, and the overall feeling of being in Baltimore is really captured from the moment you arrive at the airport by the amazing People. Another blogger asked if we could capture the smell of a new airplane in a bottle. If we ever do, I say we add it to the great new smell of a whole brand-spankin' new terminal :) In 2006, I flew out of BWI for the last time as I moved out of Baltimore back to California (I'm currently actually in the Caribbean for medical school...SWA please fly to St. Maarten! 🙂 Southwest was the last airline I flew out of BWI (and in the process of getting to LAX, I got to see Indianapolis and Las Vegas airports - it was a fun, well, skipping trip across the country) - I look forward to taking SWA back to Baltimore again some day. Until then - VISIT BWI!!! From there, go visit the Inner Harbor and all the great places in Baltimore. Then come back to BWI and enjoy the terminal!

Please start flights into Tunica, MS or Memphis, TN. Northwest has a monopoly on the market here and Southwest would absolutely knock the socks off the market. Locals are concerned with the possible loss of the Northwest hub, but I compare it to Raleigh, NC and the American hub there. Profitable routes were picked up by other airlines and while there was an initial "net loss" of routes, Raleigh is bigger and better than ever! WE NEED SOUTHWEST IN MEMPHIS!

I really wish Southwest Air would start flying to Tunica or Memphis. Little Rock is a hard trip from Memphis due to the heavy truck traffic between Memphis and Little Rock. Robert

While I like many othger Southwest airports, I sincerely hope that Southwest will consider adding the new Plattsburgh, NY, International Airport to their list. This new commerical airport , using the fl;ightway from the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, has just opened and has space for some carriers. Southwest would be a great addition!

My favorite Southwest Airport is Seattle, Washington. I was cheering for Southwest to fly in and out of Boeing Field rather than SEATAC; The King County Executive Ron Sims put an end to that plan. ;,-( My worst Southwest Airports are Las Vegas, NV and San Diego, CA. A logistical nightmare. What about having Wichita, Kansas as a Southwest Airport? :-)

TSA rules say we can only bring one zip lock bag with pill bottles. Since all meds mustbe in the orginal perscription bottles, Since my wife has 8 bottles, she will need several zip top plastic bags. Can she bring more that one throug handbag security check? she can not let the pills on the check in baggage, in case there would be a 24 hour delay in getting our baggage at our distnation, according to your advertisment.

I too would love to see SouthWest fly out of Huntsville. North Alabama is does not have enough airline competition and the prices are very high. For shorter trips, I drive to Nashville and take SW, but it isn't feasible to pay for parking for longer trips. Please schedule some flights to and from Huntsville. (Huntsville to Cleveland would be especially nice considering aerospace tech is such a huge industry in Huntsville and both Huntsville and Cleveland have N.A.S.A.) Thank you!

Another vote for Islip, as said by others above, clean, friendly staff, good access, reasonable parking, TSA /security runs smooth. And best of all, nice tour over Long Island outbound and inbound! ISP to LAX would be nice, cannot be much further than LAX to BWI. (160-170 NM?) Bonus: never saw a scene which would have made it into the show "Airline" (I like a four bucks or 2, but that show is a testimonial for the need for moderation!)

BWI is by far the best airport served by SWA. It is, to my knowledge, the only airport served directly by an Interstate highway, and since the completion of MD 100 connecting I-95 with I-70 via US 29, provides almost rush hour proof access. I live much closer to Dulles, but BWI is actually easier, and faster. Not ot mention the beautiful new A concourse and the many good places to eat INSIDE the security perimeter. Great airport staffed by great people that works the way it is supposed to. Only gripe is the closure of the A concourse exit in the evenings, which means you have to walk a lot farther to get to the hourly garage through the skyway connecting to the A concourse. But, they should get it all worked out some day.

I've been to a lot of SW cities, but none on SW because you don't fly in or out of GA! PLEASE start service into Atlanta so that I can have wonderful, peaceful travels again!

I'd like to see a non-stop flight from Islip NY to Savanna at a DISCOUNTED price. All flight to SAvanna are so expensive. Only travel non-stop; tired of going to LGA

Just give Huntsville, Al 1 single Southwest flight to anywhere and in 3 months we will show you a very strong market. I just moved to Hsv and there is lots of $$$ and lots of people who travel (defense, aerospace, bio-med, vacations). I guarantee you after the 3 month trial period, Southwest will add 2 more flights. Each year, approx 150,000 Hsv air travelers drive to Nashville or Bham to catch SW to Vegas or Phx or other destinations. Hsv is busier than most of the airports SW currently supports. Bigger than Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Little Rock, Machester. Give Hsv a flight !!!!

Is there any truth to the rumors around the Memphis area that Southwest will be coming to Tunica, MS? That would be the best thing for the people of that area in a long time. I fly in every week to Little Rock from Dallas; then drive over to Desoto County. Every flight I talk to people doing the same. Crazy!!!! Come on Southwest!!!! You can do it!!! Ryan

I would like to see Southwest Airlines fly non-stop from ISP to SAV. So many people have settled there and need a quick way to visit South Carolina. Please consider this request. Charmaine

So i think that southwest should think about having a flights into Tunica, MS. Tunica is only 40 miles away from memphis and i would drive that far to get a cheap flight out of memphis. Anything out of memphis is an arm and leg. So come on southwest give the memphis area a chance. The airport is brand new too so hey that would be even better for you guys.
