Flying to San Juan from Baltimore and looked at the path that Southwest takes. Rather than fly directly there using a great-circle route, the flight path hugs the US coast all the way down to Florida and then turns southeast out over the water. Any pilots out there that can tell me why this is? It has to be further which means more fuel expended. Thanks!!

I suspect it's ETOPS related. Gotta stay close to land.
