Boeng 737-800 Seat Belt Extender

New Arrival

Congrats on SWA's redesign in the 737-800 plane. However, the redesign includes new seat belts so my previous seat belt extender will not work. Does anyone know where I can find an extender that will work? Yes, I have tried Amazon and eBay (both only have Type A and B, neither of which fit the new 737-800). Thanks!

A flight attendant should be able to provide a seatbelt extender for you upon boarding.

I didn't know you could use your own 🤔 ...

As per SWA COS policy:

Once onboard the aircraft, if necessary, please request a seatbelt extension from our Flight Attendant. Only one seatbelt extension may be used, and only seatbelt extensions provided by Southwest Airlines are approved for use onboard our aircraft. (underline emphasis mine).

You can get both seatbelt styles on Amazon. I have one that fits the older designed planes and I also have one that fits the 800 series. I keep both in my carry-on all the time since I never know in advance which style planes I'll be traveling on and I fly on Southwest at least once a month. I always use my own and I have compared them to the ones on the plane. They're made by the same manufacturer as the seatbelts on the seats. Flight attendants have seen me pull out my own extender and use it. Nobody has ever said a word to me about it. Other than the one time a flight attendant discreetly complimented me for being prepared. I am losing weight and will be very excited when the time comes I won't need an extender. But until then, I'll keep bringing them. I totally understand the embarrassment of having to ask for an extender. And they only have a limited number on board. I saw them tell a guy once that they gave out all the spares. He had to wait until the safety demo was completed before the flight attendant could give hers to him. He looked mortified when she walked it back to him with everyone watching. That is why I always come prepared!

The FAA states that only an extender provided by the airline is allowed to be used in flight you can't use your own.

Though against the rules, I can see why people might want to have their own seat belt extender. It is inconvenient to have to ask for one, and some people might find it embarrassing.

I used to need one, and I don't anymore. It was a small but nice improvement in my life when I didn't have to worry about asking for one every time I boarded a plane.
