Can I bring a Longboard as a checked bag without it being put into a bag?

I am planning on bringing a longboard on my upcoming trip and plan on checking it without putting it in a bag. Would I have an issues with checking this?

This is the link to the page for Special Luggage.  Click down on the "Sports Equipment" section to see the following wording:

"Sports Equipment - Special Items

The items listed below will be accepted as Checked Baggage for a $75 each way charge.

  • Surfboard/kiteboard, keels and fins must be removed and placed in carryon or checked baggage."

You do realize that a naked board will likey be subject to more baggage handling abuse than one

clothed in some kind of bag?
