We are traveling to Cooperstown, NY this summer for the Cooperstown baseball camp. For obvious reasons, we are leery of checking our son's baseball equipment. I would rather it not go through normal baggage check. I know it can't be a carry on item due to the exposed bat being considered a "bludgeon," but hoping it qualifies for a gate check. I have searched in this forum and other places and can't find a definitive answer.
Any help would be appreciated!

As you noted, it's not allowed as a carry-on and TSA would therefore not allow it to pass security. You'll have to check it or ship it.

I know I have to check it, but can I gate check it versus luggage check it?
