Does a carryon bag need to be checked in & tagged?

“Checked” usually refers to luggage taken by the airline as the opposite to “carry on” - do you mean inspected? Yes you take it through TSA.

Carry-on luggage doesn’t have to be tagged but it’s not a bad idea to have some identifying info on it or in it in case it gets misplaced onboard. It does not get a luggage tag from Southwest though.

The only exception to the above happens if all on plane storage is full.  When that happens you "gate check" your bag, and then wait for it to be delivered to you at the gate of your arrival airport (ie you do not go to baggage claim).
