Hi I’m booking a flight from bwi to lax in December 4-10 and I was wondering for check bags how does that work with connecting flights and round trips I’ve never flown before

Anytime I've ever flown with checked luggage and a connecting flight, it was checked through to my final destintation, and I just picked it up there.

On Southwest you are allowed 2 free checked bags within their allowances (50# and a physical size limit). Do you have overweight or oversize checked luggage or more than 2 ?

You aren't obligated to bring the same luggage with you each way so yes, you'd pay if necessary due to quantity of bags > 2, over 50 lbs, or oversized for each one-way separately.
