Connection in SAN

When having a connection, do you have to go to baggage claim, get bags, check-in, and then go back to the terminal, or does Southwest switch the bags from the plane to the other plane? I have to catch an hour-long connection (including boarding time) in San Diego and a 50 min connection (including boarding time) in LAX.

Unless you are coming into the United States from an international airport you do not have to claim your bags, they will be transferred for you (assuming the flight was booked as one trip and not 2 separate trips).

Just to be clear, your bags will be transferred between Southwest flights. However Southwest does not transfer bags to/from other airlines. (But then the two connecting flights would not be on the same ticket).
