I'm pretty certain I don't.. but wanted to be sure. He's 8 and we just bought a regular ticket for him. Does he need a birth certificate at check in?

Hello. No you don't

No need for identification for TSA. Here's a link with the pertinent information from TSA: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification.

Maybe. Where are you flying to and from?

for 95% of SW flights, the above answer is correct.  If Intl, a totally different rule.

International flights would require a passport, not a birth certificate. The only time a birth certificate is required is if the child is under 2 and flying as a lap child (non-ticketed) OR child age 2 through 11 flying on a Child Fare. Commonly purchased wanna get away fares do not require proof of age.
