For what it’s worth, I deal with this challenge even as a Companion Pass holder and as A List Preferred - SW’s highest elite status. 

 

I always board with with a good position...usually A30 or less every time. With that said, my wife - who is my companion and flies for free - does not receive any preferential boarding. We have a daughter who just turned two who will also now have her own boarding position. If we all want to board together, we have two options: family boarding or with the person who has the highest boarding position. 

 

I understand and your frustration because I’ve experienced very similar. In your case, I recommend buying EBCI for both you and your child to ensure you can board together from the Preferred/better boarding position.
