Kid Carrier vs Stroller

I'm traveling soon with my kids to go hiking in Utah. I plan to bring a backpack type carrier for my 2 year old. It's light but a metal frame and material. It doesn't fold up enough to be a carry-on. It'll be more useful to me then a stroller. But it's not a stroller and it's not a carseat. I plan to use it to navigate through the airport with her after security. Can I check it at the gate?

I don't see why not.  It might take a few extra minutes to get through TSA screening so allow for a little extra time.  If you have a bag it could fit in that would be great to avoid it snagging on anything when you gate check it.
