Preboarding exception for 7 year old?

We're taking a 5+ hrs flight tomorrow and were given C31, 32 and 33 at check-in 24 hrs before the flight. I have a 7 year old and don't want him to sit by himself for the 5+ hours.

Yes, I made a mistake by not paying for the early bird, but that's not an option now.

Does anyone know if the gate agents usually make exceptions to the 6 yr or younger rule so my wife can maybe board with my 7 year old kid after the A boarding? I can board alater with the C boarding.
