Wrong. I have spoken to SW about this issue. If the seat is available, then it is open.
The only exception is a seat originally taken and the person is not presently occupying the seat like being in the toilet.

@floridaguy I don't think you are listening. Yes, the seat is available, but someone could also save it and tell people they are saving it. Southwest crew would not say they cannot do that.

@floridaguy so ridiculous. Believe what you want, it doesn't matter to me. If someone complains to crew about someone saving a seat crew will not intervene as there is no policy against it. You are still welcome to sit there and crew will not prevent that either.

Good luck getting into a fight about it. Then you'll have the privilege of being booted from the plane and taking a different flight.
Move on and take a different "good' seat" There are lots of them

@floridaguy cool. Thanks for wasting everyone's time with something that doesn't affect you.

Said the guy who later in the thread says that he pre boards anyway. Of course he sits where he wants. He pre boards. Plenty of open seats...
What a phony...

I have the right to preboard and take a seat that is convenient to me.
Nothing you can do about it but watch.

Stay out the exit row, and let's all move on.
