So like many I was affected by the cancellations mess last week I just got this email for 25,000 points
if you were affected by cancellations you might check your email in case you have points coming your way
i have only seen points as compensation one other time from Southwest so this is a very interesting approach instead of the usual LUV vouchers
thoughts?

I just received it as well and think it's a great gesture. There will of course be people that will still be upset, but I don't think anything Southwest can do will satisfy them.
To those "never fly Southwest again" folks you're welcome to send me your codes, I will put them to good use.
I would be curious to know the thought behind giving points instead of vouchers. Perhaps the lack of expiration date on points has something to do with it?

First thought was no expiration date of points
